SAN ANTONIO, Texas ? California Baptist will head into day two of the NAIA National Championships in first place in the men's side and second place on the women's side.
The Lancers grabbed 20 points from Ben Wahlman who captured his third straight national title on the three-meter board with an NAIA record 569.60. The junior from Manchester, Mo., broke his own school record, set at the PCSC Championships, by scoring a 533.40 in the preliminaries before breaking Grant Brehaut's record of 553.85, set back in 2004, in the finals.
CBU's women's team now sits in second place, with 17 points, after Lindsey Cline finished second on the one-meter board with a school record 414.65. The senior from Albuquerque, N.M., was seeded fourth heading into the competition, but shattered a record (342.95) set by Cherie Vivona at the 2003 NAIA National Championships. Asbury's (Ky.) Caitlyn Taylor took the one-meter board with a 422.55 in the finals.
Both Lancer teams will get set for the first full day of competition as the 200 medley relay, 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free and 800 free relay will all be featured. Wahlman will also go for his sixth national title overall and third straight on the one-meter board.
Preliminary events start at 10 a.m. and finals get underway at 6 p.m. at Palo Alto College.
