SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. ? What was built as an Inland Empire showdown ended up being a beat down as No. 1 NCAA Division II Cal State San Bernardino defeated No. 2 California Baptist 3-1 (25-22, 25-14, 17-25, 25-15).
The Coyotes (13-1) almost hit at a .400 clip for the match going .391 (56-13-110) while holding the Lancers (16-2) to a .244 hitting percentage.
Fei Shi was the only Lancer to hit in double-figures with 12 kills and just missed a double-double with nine digs. Krista Hasemeyer had a team-high 33 assists and tied a season-high with three aces. Katrina Clark also had a team-high 13 digs.
Cal State San Bernardino hit over .400 in three of the four sets and out dug CBU 55-34.
The Lancers didn't even take their first lead in any set until the third. The Coyotes led from start to finish in the first two sets to take a 2-0 match lead.
CBU jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the third set, but CSUSB used a 6-1 run to take the lead back at 7-6. CBU retook the lead at 8-7 and 9-8 with both leads coming on kills from Jessica Ewoldt. After taking the lead at 12-11, CBU used an 8-2 run to take its biggest lead of the night at 20-13 before finally taking the set.
Cal State San Bernardino went back to business in the final set hitting its highest percentage of the night at .480. The Coyotes took a 5-1 lead early, but CBU battled back to lead by one three times with the last one coming at 12-11. That's when the Coyotes used a 14-3 run to close out the set and the match.
The Lancers now put their Golden State Athletic Conference streak on the line as CBU goes for five straight conference wins, Tuesday, when it travels to San Diego, Calif., to take on No. 16 Point Loma Nazarene.
