AROUND THE HORN

RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- Derek Horn made the most of his 17 minutes.
Horn came off the bench in the 28th minute, scored twice in an eight-minute span and then called it a day, leading NCAA Division II Cal State L.A. to a 2-1 non-conference win over California Baptist University Monday afternoon in Riverside.
The loss is the Lancers' first of the season, snapping their three-game winning streak. They fall to 3-1. Meanwhile, the Golden Eagles, who were coming off a 1-0 win over Vanguard last Friday, improve to 3-0.
With just 10 shots total between the two teams, the dangerous chances were few and far between. However, Horn took advantage of being in the right place at the right time twice, scoring on two of the Golden Eagles' three shots in the game.
“I thought for the first 20 minutes we dictated the pace of play,” said CBU head coach Ryan Jorden. “Around the midway point of the half, we lost it a little, things started getting away from us, and they took advantage. Credit to them (CSULA), they are a good team.”
In the 30th minute, less than three full minutes after being inserted into the lineup, Horn put home a rebound to put CSULA up 1-0. Kristian Gaustad blistered a free kick from just outside the box, and all CBU keeper Jeff Redinger could do was knock it away. Unfortunately, the rebound fell right to the feet of Horn, who buried the ball into the net.
Just eight minutes later, the Golden Eagles broke loose on a counter attack. Gaustad ran onto a ball down the left flank and sent in a perfect cross into the box. Horn slid past his defender and headed the cross past a frozen Redinger and inside the left post for a 2-0 Cal State L.A. advantage that stood through the intermission. Horn came out after the first half and didn't enter in the second half.
The Lancers were able to cut the deficit in half just 15 minutes into the second half. Osvaldo Bastida had possession in the middle of the field and sent a perfect chip over the defense and to the right side of the box to a waiting Tim Wardell, who ran onto it and lifted a shot past a charging Tobias Hummel and into the net, making it 2-1.
Less than five minutes later, the Lancers nearly got the equalizer on a similar play when Wardell again broke free on the right side of the box, however, this time his shot sailed just high. Three minutes after that, Hummell made a save of another Wardell attempt, and neither team mustered a chance from that point on.
“The guys worked their socks off getting back in the game, and we had a chance to tie the game late,” said Jorden. “They played hard. We had the better of the chances, and we saw a little bit more today of the next steps we need to take in the process. The fact that we are 3-1 at this point, I feel good about it.”
