RIVERSIDE, Calif. — There are some holes that are just too deep to climb out of, but California Baptist University just missed pulling their way out of a 25-point hole in an 80-71 loss to NCAA Division II Lewis (Ill.) Saturday night.
The Lancers (6-4) trailed 54-29, the biggest lead of the game, with 13:40 in the game and were down 23, 60-37, with 10:18 to play. That's when the Lancers' Brenna Hahn and Monique Calvello went to work on a 12-1 run. Calvello started the run with a free-throw before nailing a jumper and another free-throw. Hahn then hit a pair from the charity stripe before Calvello sank a layup and another free throw to make it 61-46. Hahn then drained three straight free-throws to bring CBU within 12 at 61-49.
The Flyers took a 64-51 lead with 6:10 left, but the Lancers scored six straight on back-to-back treys from Kendra Morris and Hahn to make it 64-57 with 4:29 left. That was as close as CBU came as it came within seven twice more, but could never climb out of the early second-half hole.
CBU trailed by just two at 11-9 early in the first half before the Flyers used a 16-5 run to take a 27-14 lead with 8:13 left in the half. Lewis took its biggest lead of the half at 32-16 with 6:50 left in the half before the Lancers scored five straight to make it 32-21. The Lancers trailed 36-25 with 4:10 remaining in the half, but Lewis scored four straight to end the half and take a 40-25 lead at intermission.
Hahn led all scorers with a season-high 23 points on 6-of-10 shooting, 2-for-3 from 3-point range. She was also 9-for-10 from the charity stripe and added four steals. Calvello scored 11 points, nine of which came in the second half, and notched her first double-double of the year with 11 rebounds. Heather Couzens also added 10 points and five boards.
Lewis held CBU to just 37.9 percent shooting from the floor and shot 43.4 percent from the field. The Flyers went 8-for-19 from 3-point range while the Lancers hit just five of their 18 attempts. Lewis also got it done from the charity strip, sinking 26-for-32. CBU shot 22-for-29 from the free-throw line.
The Lancers don't hit the hardwood again until after Christmas for the GSAC Challenge, Dec. 29-30.
