FRESNO, Calif. — Megan Bradford scored a team-high 12 points as California Baptist University fell 64-53 to Fresno Pacific.
The Lancers (10-11, 3-8 GSAC) shot just 29.5 percent from the field on 13-of-44 shooting. CBU committed 21 turnovers as it lost its seventh straight game.
Bradford was the only Lancer in double figures as Brenna Hahn finished with nine points. Kendra Morris and Elisha Taylor each scored seven. Heather Couzens pulled down a team-high eight rebounds while Monique Calvello grabbed five boards.
The Lancers led 6-5 early in the first half, but the Sunbirds used a 9-1 run to lead 13-7. CBU answered by hitting six of its next eight free throws and added a layup to eventually tie the game at 15 with 4:50 left in the half. Both teams traded buckets until the Sunbirds sank four from the charity stripe to lead 23-19 with 48 seconds left in the half. Rachel McDaniel though closed it to two at 23-21 to end the half.
CBU quickly tied the game at 23 early in the second half, but the Sunbirds scored six straight to lead 29-23. Calvello then hit a shot inside and Hahn hit a pair of free throws to make it 29-27, but FPU pushed it back to a 34-28 lead with a layup and a trey with 12:32 left to play. The Lancers cut the deficit to four, three different times, and trailed 40-34 when Bradford found the bottom of the net on a 3-pointer with 6:32 remaining.
Fresno Pacific responded by pushing the lead out to 43-37, but another Bradford jumper pulled CBU within four with six minutes to play. The Lancers took a huge blow though just 12 seconds later when Hahn fouled out which in turn led to a 10-0 run by FPU who took a 53-39 lead with 3:37 to play, the largest lead of the game. That was all the Sunbirds needed to close out the home win.
While the Lancers were 11-for-14 from the charity stripe in the first half, CBU finished just 23-33 from the line. They were 12-for-19 in the second half.
CBU returns to Riverside, Tuesday, when it hosts San Diego Christian at 5:30.
