RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- It was a standard Saturday for the 16th ranked California Baptist University men's water polo team, as the Lancers posted two wins and continued to break records.
CBU (28-5) defeated La Verne 19-6 in game one and beat Whittier College 8-5 in the second match. However, the story of the day was Aaron Steiger.
The senior broke one school record and matched another, something he has been accustomed to in his Lancer career.
“He's probably the best all-around player to come out of our program,” said Head Coach Rick Rowland.
In the first match CBU faced La Verne and had little trouble taking an early lead. After goals from Steiger, Chris Toy, Alan Ogden, and Evan Vardayou the Lancers led 5-2 after the fist quarter.
In the second quarter CBU extended their lead thanks to an early goal by Steiger. His second score gave him 110 on the year, surpassing the previous mark of 109 (set by him in 2008).
Nick Janzen got a rare start at goalie and was fantastic, shutting out the Leopards in the quarter as the Lancers piled on to end the half up 9-2. The keeper also had a phenomenal 5-meter block that lit up the bench.
“[Janzen] was great in the cage for us today,” said Rowland.
The third quarter was more of the same as four Lancers scored to give CBU a 14-5 lead. With the game in hand Rowland emptied his bench, but that didn't stop CBU from competing.
The Lancers' depth was on display as the backups continued the onslaught scoring five goals while Austen Ramer (who entered in the 4th) limited the Leopards to just one goal.
In the match 11 players scored for CBU as the Lancers controlled the pool from the opening whistle.
The second game of the day was much more competitive than the first as the Whittier Poets stuck with CBU through most of the match. Both teams struggled to score early, in large part due to the keepers' strong play.
“Their goalie was great,” said Rowland. “But we have to shoot better than we did today.” CBU took 31 shots and connected on only eight.
Steiger had the Lancers' only goal of the first while Whittier took a 2-1 lead at the end of the quarter.
Ramer shut out the Poets in the second, but CBU failed to take advantage posting only one goal in the period to give the two teams a 2-2 tie at the half.
The Lancers continued to trade goals with Whittier as Vardayou and Toy scored early in the quarter.
With CBU leading 5-4 Steiger finally gave the Lancers a little breathing room.
His second goal of the game marked the 32nd (CBU record) time he notched multiple goals in a game this season. Steiger set the mark in 2008.
But problems remained for the offense as CBU missed all five of their 6-on-5 opportunities to that point.
After the third the Lancers led 6-4 and were in danger of dropping their third home match of the season. An early score from Brent Troutman gave the Lancers a three-goal lead and proved to be enough to give CBU the win.
The eight goals were the second fewest The Lancers scored all season, as Whittier's Chad Everund tallied 12 saves on the day.
Ramer had 6 saves on the match, holding the Poets to just five goals.
The win brings CBU within one game of another school record (29 wins).
Steiger, who is the only Lancer to ever score 300 career goals, is now closing in on 400 (385).
“That's a record that will be in the record books forever,” said Rowland of Steiger's 113 goals; partly due to the game constraints that will take place as CBU makes the transition to NCAA division II.
Rowland continued his compliments of the senior saying, “He's going to be tough to replace that's for sure.”
