FULLERTON, Calif. --- No. 19 California Baptist University showed it belongs in the Top 25 a day after cracking the poll, dominating Hope International 89-58 for its second-straight GSAC victory.
V.V. Vasciunaite led another high-scoring charge by the Lancers, tying a school record with eight 3-pointers. Vasciunaite went 8-for-11 from beyond the arc, on the way to a game-high 28 point effort. Vasciunaite becomes the fifth player in program history, first since Nicole Davis in 2008, to hit eight 3-pointers in a game.
“Overall I thought we had a great team effort tonight,” said Head Coach John Marcum. “We shot a pretty high clip from the field. V.V. really got us going tonight.”
CBU never trailed in the game, ending the first half with a 26-point lead and cruising to the victory from there.
The Royals kept the game close early in the first half and pulled within two at the 10:12 mark. CBU proceeded to hit five straight 3-pointers to push the lead to 31-14. The Lancers lead never dropped below double-digits from there on out.
“That run midway through the first half put us ahead comfortably and we were able to take care of business from there on out,” said Marcum. “We got good play out of our bench to hold onto the lead.”
As a team CBU shot 55 percent from the field and 56 percent from behind the arc. The Lancers also shot 80 percent from the free throw line to complete the all around hot shooting night.
After going 0-for-5 from 3-point territory in the first half, the Royals tried to play catch up hitting 6-of-8 3-pointers in the second half. Hope International shot just 37 percent from the field and 63 percent from the foul line, however.
The Lancers had four players, including Vasciunaite, score in double-figures, with Brenna Hahn chipping in 19, Marlee Rice at 12 and Chynna Burwell at 10.
The Lancers move to 8-3 overall, 2-1 GSAC, while the Royals fall to 5-2, 1-2.
“Any time we can get a road win in conference we're excited,” said Marcum. “Now we just want to carry this momentum on to our game against Westmont.”
CBU faces Westmont at home Thursday night at 5:30 p.m.
