POMONA, Calif. --- No. 2 California Baptist University had another slow start Wednesday night, but rebounded and for the second straight night got a 3-1 victory after dropping the first set.
The Lancers defeated Cal Poly Pomona (24-26, 25-21, 27-25, 25-21) on the road to improve their record to 16-0 on the season and drop the Broncos to 3-4.
It was once again the middle that did the most efficient damage for CBU, with Bree Rauschenbach ripping nine kills on 18 attempts (.389) and Jelena Dragovic recording five kills on nine attempts (.444). Ingrid Carmona had her second straight 20 kill match to lead the Lancers as the only player with a double-digit kill total.
After each squad took a set to open the match the two teams seemingly knew the third would determine the outcome and battled past the 25 point mark with the Lancers finally taking a 27-25 victory. CBU would finish off the match in the next set.
The Broncos jumped out to a 12-5 lead in the third game, but the Lancers would go on a 15-8 run and tie the match at 20-20. Cal Poly helped CBU out by committing six errors during the run. Rauschenbach had two kills and an ace during the run and Linjun Ji had two aces a night after she dropped six aces on Point Loma Nazarene. After the two teams battled to a 24-24 tie, CBU got two kills from Carmona and an error from the Broncos to take the set.
CBU jumped on top of the Broncos in the first set 7-1, but couldn't hold the lead as Cal Poly quickly tied the game up 10-10. Neither team looked overly efficient in the first game with the Broncos only slightly edging the Lancers on the attack, hitting .103 to CBU's .088.
Rauschenbach had five of 10 aces on the match for the Lancers, while Ji had three more. Katie Lockard led the CBU in digs with 15. The Lancers held a slight edge in total blocks in the match recording 11 to Cal Poly's 10.
CBU returns home for its third match of the week, facing San Diego Christian in the fourth conference match of the season Saturday at 7 p.m. The Lancers are 3-0 in GSAC play.
