FAIRBANKS, Alaska --- Not since making the same trip nearly four years ago, California Baptist University had not traveled as great of a distance for competition before making the 3500 plus mile trek to Alaska on Friday. In a head-to-head meet, the Lancers defeated Alaska-Fairbanks 111-94 in the closest margin of victory in the two schools' series history.
As one of the highlights of the day, Mary Hanson broke the Patter Center record in the 100 yard backstroke with her 57.08 split time in the 400 yard medley relay. Hanson, along with Gina Rhue, Adriana Quezada and Hannah Braun placed first in the medley relay, finishing with a time of 4:03.02, just a half a second faster than AK.
Kyndal Terwilliger won the 1000 yard freestyle, with Anna Megli and Brittany Blankenship finishing second and fourth. Each swam season-best times, with Terwilliger setting the pace with a time of 10:53.38.
Terwilliger also finished on top in the 500 yard freestyle, with Hanna Braun coming in a close second, with times of 5:16.51 and 5:16.59, respectively. Natalie Heihn placed fourth.
In the 100 yard backstroke, Hanson won with a time of 57.62. Norra Stroh placed third and Laura Shipman finished fifth.
Hanson also came in second in the 50 yard freestyle.
Molly Larson swam a 1:09.34 to win the 100 yard freestyle. Hannah Stipek also finished third.
Larson also led the way in the Lancers' second through fourth place finishes in the 100 yard freestyle at 55.91. Rachael Stoffel placed third at 56.95 and Megli, at 57.52, finished fourth.
Hazel Castillo finished second in the 100 yard butterfly at 1:01.48. Quezada came in third at 1:01.85.
In the 200 yard IM, Stroh, Rhue and Castillo finished second through fourth.
CBU takes on Fairbanks again Saturday at 1 p.m., for a second competition and 11 more events.
