The Lancers opened the morning with a 3-0 (25-22, 25-20, 25-18) victory over Colorado Christian and then handed Grace (Ind.) a 3-0 (25-17, 26-24, 25-16) loss in the nightcap.
"This was a good way for us to start the tournament," said Head Coach Ryan McGuyre. "We were tested in a few sets but held our composure and got through. I thought we did a good job saving our legs by sweeping both matches and that helps in a format like this."
Ingrid Carmona led the Lancers in the opener, committing just one error to her 13 kills in the match. She hit .429 in the contest and also led the team with 11 digs.
Though the Lancers scored the sweep, the Cougars kept each set close.
CBU staved off a four-point run late in the first, getting a big kill from Bree Rauschenbach to finish the opening game off, and then used a 4-1 run late in the second to go up 2-0. The Lancers had been up by as much as seven mid-way through the second game.
The two teams traded the lead early in the third, but CBU would take control of the game and the match behind the service of Chloe Ainsworth. After a service error gave CBU a two-point advantage, Ainsworth stepped up to serve and helped the Lancers rattle off six-straight points, finishing the run off with a kill of her own. The Cougars hit .091 in the final game, as the Lancers won by seven.
CBU served 11 aces in the match, getting five from Rauschenbach, while only committing nine service errors.
In the late game, the Lancers had relatively easy victories in the first and third games, but were taken to extra points in the second.
Grace took a 23-22 lead late, coming back from a two point deficit. The Lancers' Jelena Dragovic answered by ripping a kill down the center of the court and then combined on a block with Ingrid Carmona to give CBU set point, 24-23.
After Grace evened the game back up, Carmona took her turn ripping a kill down the center of the court and Dragovic went back to work on the block, combining with Jordyn Siko on the game winning stuff.
Carmona again led the way offensively, notching 12 kills in the match, Dragovic had 11. Jessica Kalama led the team with 11 digs.
"Ingrid hit great for us in the first match and I thought our service was excellent," said McGuyre. "Megan Glennie didn't have a ton of digs on the stat sheet tonight, but she came up with some I thought were huge for us late in games."
The Lancers ran their record to 22-10 with the pair of wins. CBU faces Southwest Assemblies of God (Texas) at 10 a.m. (EST) and Malone (Ind.) at 4 p.m. (EST) Friday to complete pool play.
