ST. OGDEN, Utah -- Looking to knock off the second place team in the PacWest on its home floor, California Baptist University came out on fire and nearly closed out a victory over Dixie State before falling in five (12-25, 25-23, 25-20, 22-25, 15-10).
CBU won the first set convincingly and then forced a fifth set with a win in the fourth but ultimately suffered the loss in the deciding game. The Lancers fall to 13-8 and 9-4 in the PacWest, while the Red Storm is now 15-6, 12-1. CBU will get another shot at Dixie State in the Van Dyne Gym Thursday at 7 p.m.
Three Lancers finished with double-digit kills, with Lauren Hackett and Michelle Waber grabbing 20 and 19, respectively. Lauren Marr had 15 kills on a .424 attack percentage. Becky Moodie had a team-high 18 digs, while Tori Hinderaker had 13 and Waber had 11. Jordyn Siko also had a double-double with 59 assists and 11 digs.
CBU got out to a fast start, scoring the first three points and then building that up to a 10-4 lead. An 11-5 run from there gave the visitors a commanding 21-9 cushion en route to a 25-12 victory, as the Lancer hit at a .412 percent in the opener.
After taking an early 14-12 edge in the second set, CBU fell into a late 23-19 deficit. With a no-quit attitude, the Lancers came back to tie things up by scoring the next four points -- the last two coming on kills from Jenna Perry and Siko. Dixie State held on to take the set, though, 25-23.
The Red Storm built on the momentum and took a quick 10-5 advantage in the next set. CBU would close within three on a few occasions, but could not pull any closer before falling 25-20 in the third.
Down again in the fourth, CBU rallied for a big victory. DSU took a 10-6 edge, but a 5-0 run book ended by kills from Perry and Marr gave the Lancers an 11-10 lead. Three kills from Waber and two other from Hackett gave CBU a nice cushion, 19-15, before the Red Storm brought it down to just 19-18. Waber and Marr fueled a 3-1 run, as the Lancers went up 22-19 and clinched the match on a Hackett spike.
Dixie State got off to another fast start in the fifth set, scoring the first four points in front of its home crowd. CBU trailed the rest of the way, never pulling closer than three points before dropping the deciding set, 15-10.
Before the rematch with the Red Storm on Thursday, the Lancers host Point Loma Wednesday, also at 7 p.m.
