Feeling At Home

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — After beginning the 2014-15 campaign on the road, California Baptist University finally got to enjoy the comforts of home Friday evening.

The Lancers—who rank No. 18 in the NCAA Division II Media Poll, presented by D2SIDA—defeated University of Colorado at Colorado Springs 85-69 to move to 3-1 on the season and drop the Mountain Lions—sitting at No. 8 in the D-II Media Poll—to 2-1.

Four CBU hoopsters finished the night in double-figures, led by Courtney Nelson with 22 points. Nelson went 9-for-15 from the field and a perfect 4-for-4 at the line. Darsha Burnside grabbed her third double-double of the season with 10 points (4-for-6) and 10 rebounds. Cassidy Mihalko (6-for-14) and Kamille Diaz (6-for-11, 4-for-5 from distance) rounded out the top four scorers with 17 and 16 points, respectively.

"I was pleased with the way we played tonight," said head coach Jarrod Olson. "We had really good energy and it was really nice to play in front of our home crowd. Courtney got us going early with some drives and then Cassidy and Kamille hit some big threes in the second half to keep the momentum going."

Neither team could jump out too far in front in the first half, heading into the locker room at halftime with the score at 38-32 in favor of the Lancers. CBU shot a 43.2-percent from the field and held the Mountain Lions' Abby Kirchoff—who came into the contest averaging 22.5 points per game—to just one point in the half.

"Defensively we did a good job on Kirchhoff," said Olson. "That was one of our keys going into the game."

UCCS grabbed the first bucket of the second half to cut the Lancers' lead to four points, but CBU responded with a 12-3 run to extend its lead into double-digits at 50-37. Nelson initiated the run by driving to the basket and Burnside capped it with a put-back to give her team the 13-point cushion.

The Mountain Lions battled back into single digit territory, but CBU wanted to keep the visitors at an arm's reach as it built up an 18-point lead on a 6-0 run, sparked by Mihalko's layup off a Diaz assist.

Heading down the stretch, the Lancers looked to be in the driver's seat as they were shooting over 50-percent from both inside and out of the three-point arc.

With less than two minutes left to play, the Mountain Lions started to foul to get back into the game. CBU made its shots count at the charity stripe to grab the 85-69 victory.

As a team, CBU finished the night with a 50-percent shooting percentage on both sides of the three-point arc and 80-percent at the line.

The Lancers will look to continue that offensive momentum as they take on Saint Martin's Saturday night with a 5:00 p.m. tip off back in the Van Dyne Gym.
