LOS ANGELES — A day after Thanksgiving, California Baptist University had more to be thankful for Friday afternoon. Four Lancers scored in double figures to lift their team over Cal State Dominguez Hills, 81-72.
The Lancers, who are receiving votes in the USA Today Coaches Poll, improve to 5-1 on the season, while the Toros fall to 2-3.
Courtney Nelson had a monstrous performance on offense, scoring 30 points in 29 minutes played. The sophomore went 9-for-16 from inside the arc and 3-for-4 from distance.
"I just went out and played," said Nelson. "I stuck to my game. It was a team effort, everyone contributed in their own way to get the win."
Darsha Burnside grabbed her fifth double-double of the season, scoring 13 points and picking up 12 rebounds.
Kamille Diaz and
Cassidy Mihalko also contributed to CBU's offense with 16 and 10 points, respectively.
The Lancers found themselves in a 10-2 hole to start the game, but battled back to keep the game close throughout most of the first half. Diaz sparked a 7-0 run that brought CBU within a point before Burnside completed a three-point play to take the lead briefly.
A battle commenced as the Toros tried to jump back out in front, but couldn't quite shake the Lancers. After trailing by three at 20-17, CBU took over the lead off a 9-0 run capped by Nelson's layup to force a CSUDH timeout. The Lancers kept the pressure on and the Toros off the glass for second chances to head into halftime with a 39-28 lead.
In a rollercoaster of a second half, the Toros fought back into the contest only to give up another Lancer run to trail by double-digits once more. Still, CSUDH kept fighting and made things interesting heading down the stretch.
With three-and-a-half minutes on the clock, Lancers held an 11-point advantage off a three-point shot from Diaz. The Toros brought things within two possessions at 68-63, but CBU was not about to hand it over. Diaz sank another three to keep CSUDH at arm's reach.
As CSUDH tried to foul itself back into the game, Nelson finished her chances at the line to give the Lancers the 81-72 victory.
CBU takes on the host Golden Eagles Saturday, tipping off at 4:00 p.m.
