RIVERSIDE, Calif. — California Baptist University kept its hot hand Saturday to grab an 81-62 victory over Saint Martin's.
The Lancers shot at 45.8-percent from the floor and 43.8-percent from distance to move to 4-1 on the season. The Saints fall to 1-3 overall with the loss.
Darsha Burnside continued to show she's a force to be reckoned with, grabbing her fourth double-double with massive numbers. The junior led CBU with 29 points (8-for-13) while picking up a game-high 17 rebounds.
"Darsha was a big factor in the paint with her rebounding," Coach Jarrod Olson said. "She also did an excellent job at the free-throw line."
Courtney Nelson and Kamille Diaz also added scores in double-digits with Nelson boasting 19 on the night off 8-for-17 shooting and Diaz with 13 on a 4-for-7 performance. Megan Brown finished the night with 11 rebounds. Olivia Weber continued the Lancers' theme of excellent post play on the night, with four points and strong defense.
"Darsha, Megan and Olivia really did a nice job defensively inside," Olson said. "Kamille had another nice game off the bench with some crafty ball handling and passes."
Despite falling into an early hole, CBU battled its way back into the game and took over the lead with 9:24 left in the half. Cassidy Mihalko sparked the go-ahead run, followed by a three from Diaz.
The Lancers kept pressing and walked into halftime with a 39-35 lead.
SMU put the score within two possessions at 42-37, but CBU went on an 11-0 run to extend its lead into double-digits at 53-37. The lead moved into 20-point range with 8:30 left to play after Burnside finished two shots at the line.
CBU looked like it just needed to coast down the stretch, but the Lancers weren't about to let SMU back into the contest. The home team finished its chances at the line to claim the 81-62 victory.
The Lancers head back on the road for a Thanksgiving tournament held at Cal State L.A. next weekend. CBU first faces Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday at 2:00 p.m. before taking on the host Golden Eagles on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
"It was a physical game and St. Martin's is a tough team, I am glad we were up for the challenge," Olson said. "Hopefully we can build on this weekend as we have tough games coming up next week."
