ST. GEORGE, Utah — Hoping to shake off Saturday's loss, California Baptist University came out strong against Dixie State and powered through to take a 77-59 victory.
With the win, the Lancers improve to 14-3 overall and 7-2 in the PacWest. The Red Storm drop to 5-11 on the season, 4-6 in conference.
Cassidy Mihalko led three Lancers in double figures with 23 points on the night. She went 8-for-11 from the field and a perfect 100-percent from both behind the three-point arc and the free-throw line.
Darsha Burnside (7-for-12) and Courtney Nelson (6-for-19) rounded out the trio, each adding 15 points to the Lancers' scoreline. Burnside added four blocks and 11 rebounds for her 12th double-double. Olivia Weber also grabbed double-digit boards, ending the night with 10 snags off the glass.
Nelson scored the first bucket of the night just 14 seconds into the contest, sparking a huge 16-0 run. Mihalko, Weber and Erin Asher also got in on the action as the Lancers looked to take control of the situation.
Dixie State battled back into the game, cutting the Lancers' lead to seven points at 29-22 before CBU could end the 7-0 run. Mihalko and Megan Brown both finished two shots at the charity stripe to extend their team's upper hand back into double-digits, but held a 34-25 lead at the break.
Both teams came out of halftime shooting over .400, but CBU worked to keep its margin in double-digit territory. Diaz found nothing but net on a pair of deep threes, giving the Lancers a 69-48 lead with just over eight minutes remaining.
Nelson and Mihalko combined on a fast break to put the Lancers into 20-point range at 71-48. CBU—which has won five of its six previous conference games by 20 or more points—looked to close out the game and give the Red Storm no hope for a valiant comeback.
Heading down the stretch, CBU locked in on defense and held on for the win.
CBU continues on the road as it heads to Point Loma to avenge last Saturday's 75-67 loss. The Lancers and Sea Lions tip off at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 24.
