RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Blocking has been the biggest advantage for California Baptist University in 2015, and it was never more evident than Thursday night in a PacWest matchup with Holy Names. The Lancers out blocked the Hawks by 15 for a four-set win (25-16, 25-20, 22-25, 25-19) in the Van Dyne and received 13 blocks from middle Jessica Harris.
CBU logged 20 blocks in all, which tied for a single-match high since the rally-scoring era began in 2001. Harris' block total is the second most in single-match history for the Lancers, with Malika O'Brien's 15 in a four-set match with Azusa Pacific ranking No. 1. The victory gave the Lancers sole possession of first place in the PacWest -- if only for a few hours -- with a 14-3, 7-2 in conference record. Holy Names slipped to 2-15, 0-7.
"This year, we have just been working on reading hitters and getting our feet in the right position," said Harris in explanation of the block advantage. "It's really all about reading the other team, seeing what they want to do and then taking one part of the court away. If we do that, the defense will take care of itself."
Seven CBU players finished with multiple blocks to give their team a 20-5 advantage at the net. Jenna Perry notched seven and Lauren Hackett and Abbie Gortsema each finished with six. On the backend of the defense, the Lancers received a match-high 15 digs from Tori Ortman, 13 from Nicci Hinderaker and nine from Kristin McCord, as HNU managed a .101 hitting percentage (46-31-148).
"I noticed their outside was hitting across every time," Harris said. "She was tooling me to start, but once I made the adjustment the blocks started coming. They didn't really adjust back."
Hackett had an outstanding all-around match for the Lancers, with a match-high 19 kills on a .271 percentage (19 kills, six errors on 48 attempts), 11 digs and two service aces. Lauren Marr and Perry each contributed 11 kills on percentages of .281 mark (11-2-32) and .280 (11-4-25), as CBU hit .250 (53-18-140) collectively.
A 4-0 run fueled by a Hackett ace and combo block from Perry and Harris gave the Lancers a 4-1 lead right out of the gate. Two kills from Perry and another from Hackett sparked a 5-0 CBU charge that increased its advantage to 14-7. Holy Names managed to pull within five, 16-11, but a 4-1 rally put the Lancers up comfortably, 20-12. Harris tallied a kill and a block to cap off a 3-0 run that dismissed all hope of a Hawks comeback.

A 4-0 charge started by a Hackett kill and ended by three-straight Harris blocks would give the Lancers some insurance, up 22-19. After Holy Names scrapped out a set three victory, both teams found themselves deadlocked at 6-6 in the fourth. An 8-2 run sparked by four kills and two blocks put CBU in front 14-8. The Hawks would pull back within 14-12 before Marr aided a 6-2 Lancer spurt with a block and a kill. CBU continued to earn its point down the stretch, ending things with a 4-1 run, which began with a Gortsema kill, a block and kill from Harris and Jordyn Siko ace.
BYU-Hawaii, which came into the day tied with CBU, was set to tip off later Thursday night. The Lancers will end their five-match homestand against Dominican on Saturday at 2 p.m. before heading to Hawaii next week for three matches in three days, including a clash with the Seasiders on Thursday.
"I love having home matches, we have some of the best fans," Harris said, "but as much as we love playing at home we are looking forward to the challenge of playing on the road. It will be difficult, but it's something we are excited for."
