SAN FRANCISCO — It was an important event for California Baptist University Friday afternoon as it competed in the San Francisco Invitational. The men had recently dropped to No. 21 in the NCAA Division II rankings, but that proved to be no concern as they took second place with a total of 83 points.
CBU beat out NAIA champions Southern Oregon and Division II No. 24-ranked SF State. The Lancers couldn't surpass second-ranked Chico State, who collected a low of 21 points.
Valentin Robert spearheaded the team with a fourth-place individual finish, clocking in at 24 minutes, 49.8 seconds. Abdel El-Hajjami (25:09.0) followed not far behind his fellow Frenchman, while William Ernst (25:30.1) took 24th and Duncan Perillat-Amede (25:38.7) took 27th.
"Today we finally showed we are capable of getting back to the national championships and improving," head coach Ben Gall said. "The guys were very excited about the rest of the season after today."
Some of the Lancers will compete in the Titan Challenge coming up on October 23, while the first team members take on the PacWest Conference meet the very next day, hoping to defend their four-time conference championship reign.
