BILLINGS, Mont. — Coming off its first 20-point victory to open the season Friday night, No. 3-ranked California Baptist University put on another show Saturday, defeating Simon Fraser 79-54.
The Lancers improve to 2-0 on the young season, while the Clan fall to 0-2 to start the year.
Cassidy Mihalko — who picked up All-GNAC/PacWest Tournament honors — led four Lancers scoring in double figures with 18 points (7-for-13) and posted eight rebounds. Darsha Burnside — who was named the tournament MVP — followed with 15 points on 7-for-11 shooting, also with eight boards. Courtney Nelson (6-for-12) and Erin Asher (4-for-13) rounded out the quartet with 13 and 11 points, respectively.
The Lancers opened on an 8-0 run, fueled by five points from Nelson and a three-pointer from Mihalko. CBU threatened a double-digit lead after Megan Frerer drove to the basket to make it 14-5, but SFU answered back and went on a run of its own, scoring 10-straight points to take its first lead of the game. Despite Kamille Diaz putting the Lancers back in front, 16-15, the Clan ended the first period with an 18-16 lead.
CBU came out of the break on a 7-0 run, initiated by freshman Emma Meriggioli's three-point shot that found nothing but net. Olivia Weber posted up under the bucket to keep the run going, while Nelson scored back-to-back two-point shots to put CBU up 25-18. After she forced a turnover and stole the ball away, Mihalko laid it in off a fastbreak to give the Lancers their first double-digit margin of the night, 30-20.
It didn't last, however, as the Clan closed out the half on a 14-4 run to put the teams even at 34-34 at halftime.
About halfway through the third quarter, CBU kicked things into overdrive. Up 42-36, Meriggioli finished a chance at the line. Burnside powered her way to the basket three unanswered times to put her team in front by 13. Asher kept the run fueled with two consecutive buckets, giving the Lancers a 53-36 cushion.
In the final quarter, the Clan tried to keep it close, but every time they would try to cut away at the Lancers' lead, CBU had a response. In front 65-49, CBU scored nine-straight points, capped by a Meriggioli fastbreak layup, to put the Lancers well in control in the final two minutes of the game.
Despite taking its largest lead at 79-52 off an Asher triple, CBU walked away with a 79-54 victory.
The Lancers return to California for their home opener on Thursday, Nov. 19, at 5:00 p.m., hosting Northwest Nazarene.
