Fighting Through Frustrations

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – With an emphatic win over Azusa Pacific last weekend, California Baptist University set foot in the game against UH Hilo hoping to continue its run of form.

The Lancers came into Thursday night holding a six-game winning streak, while the Vulcans were on a two-game slide. The game proved to be the end of both teams' streaks as UH Hilo edged out the Lancers 77-73. CBU drops to 19-4 overall and 12-3 in the PacWest, while the Vulcans improve to 8-11 on the season, 7-8 in conference.

Darsha Burnside finished the game with a double-double, scoring 17 points and collecting 12 rebounds, all while shooting 57-percent from the field. Cassidy Mihalko also ended the game in double figures, scoring 14 points for the Lancers.

After the Lancers scored the first five points of the game, they had a difficult time finding their rhythm the rest of the half, shooting an uncharacteristic 33-percent from the field and from behind the arc. Feeling frustrated but still within reach, CBU walked into halftime down 36-29.

However, shots continued to fall in favor of the Vulcans, but not for the Lancers as CBU found itself trailing 52-31 in the first five minutes of the second frame. Something snapped into place as the Lancers refused to back down and found the fighting spirit needed to get them back into the game.

CBU's renewed defense played a monumental part to getting back into the game as the Lancers turned on full-court press. CBU cracked down and played some hard-nosed defense, forcing seven turnovers within seven minutes and making the Vulcans take difficult shots.

With the momentum in their favor, the Lancers began scoring left and right to improve their shooting heading down the stretch. CBU cut down the deficit completely tying the game up at 73-73 with 38 seconds left in the game, but luck was not on the home team's side as the Vulcans closed out the remaining seconds for a 77-73 victory.

The Lancers looks to emulate the same fighting spirit they had in the second half against their next opponents as they host Chaminade on Feb. 14 at 5:00 p.m.
