Sail Away, Seasiders

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Coming off an impressive 24-point win on Valentine's Day, California Baptist University kept a hot hand and powered through to an 80-54 win over BYU-Hawaii Monday night.

"We had great first half and got some really good play from our bench," said head coach Jarrod Olson. "Emily [Schmidt], Ciara [Guerrero] and Chanel [Cambronero] really made an impact on the game. Kamille [Diaz] really shot the ball well and our press really worked well."

The Lancers improve to 21-4 on the season, 14-3 in the PacWest, while the Seasiders fall to 12-11 overall and 9-8 in conference.

Four hoopsters finished the night with double figures, led by Kamille Diaz with 20 points (7-for-12). Courtney Nelson followed with 15 points (6-for-20). Cassidy Mihalko (5-for-10) and Emily Schmidt (4-for-5) rounded out the quartet with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Defensively, CBU kept the conference's best three-point shooting team at only 20-percent from long range. In the first half alone, the Lancers didn't allow a single shot from the perimeter.

Although BYUH scored the first points of the night, CBU jumped out early with a 23-2 run in response to hold a 23-4 lead 10 minutes into the contest. It was a balanced effort as points came from Mihalko, Darsha Burnside, Erin Asher, Diaz and Schmidt.

The Seasiders broke up the scoring spree briefly with a jump shot of their own, but CBU kept forcing the visitors to take tough shots, meanwhile making baskets on its own.

With less than five minutes before the half, Diaz made it a 30-point contest with a deep shot from the right side. The Lancers kept pressing and held a 48-12 cushion at the half, finishing the half on an 8-2 run capped by a three-pointer from Ciara Guerrero.

Starting right where it left off, Diaz scored two points right off the whistle to hit the 50-point mark. Less than two minutes into the frame, Mihalko put the Lancers in front by 41 with a triple.

BYUH managed to cut the lead back down into the 30-point range, 63-33, threatening a dramatic comeback, but Diaz rattled in a three to keep the Seasiders at bay.

Heading down the stretch, the Seasiders kept threatening to bring the margin back down in 20-point range, forcing CBU to take tough shots and turn the ball over. They got what they were working for, making it 74-46 with three minutes to play.

Nelson responded right back by driving to the basket and Ciara Guerrero followed on a fast break off a pass from Chanel Cambronero.

The Lancers head out on the road for two games, first with a local trek to Azusa to face rival Azusa Pacific on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. CBU then heads north to Fresno Pacific the following week for a Thursday night contest, also tipping off at 5:30 p.m. The Lancers finally return home two days later on Feb. 28 with an early 4:00 p.m. tipoff time.
