Hitting Triple Digits
2/26/2015 6:40:00 PM | Women's Basketball
FRESNO, Calif. — California Baptist University exploded on offense Thursday night at Fresno Pacific, reaching triple digits for the first time this season. The Lancers dominated the second half to beat the Sunbirds 117-89 — just seven points shy of a program record of most points scored in a single game.
With the win, the Lancers move to 22-5 overall, 15-4 in the PacWest, while securing a first-round bye as the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament. The Sunbirds fall to 6-18 overall, 6-13 in conference.
Four Lancers finished the night with double figures, led by Courtney Nelson with 26 points. The sophomore was on fire, going 10-for-12 from the field. Cassidy Mihalko followed with 22 points (9-for-16) and Kamille Diaz added 18 points (6-for-12). Darsha Burnside added a double-double with 16 points and 14 rebounds.
Senior Chanel Cambronero dished out a career-high 10 assists, while only turning over the ball twice.
FPU scored the first points of the night on two free throws, but the Lancers responded with 10-straight points to take an early 10-2 lead. Nelson initiated the run off an assist from Diaz and Burnside contributed to six of the points at the post.
Emily Schmidt and Ciara Guerrero gave the Lancers their first double-digit margin of the night as Schmidt stole the ball away from the Sunbirds and found Guerrero for two points.
The Sunbirds cut the score within one possession at 20-17, forcing a CBU timeout, but a three-pointer from Diaz put the cushion back into double digits at 31-29. Still, the Lancers couldn't quite shake FPU as the home team closed out the half on a 13-0 run to be tied 54-54 at the break.
Determined to not let the game out of hand, CBU came out of halftime to get back its double digit lead right away. With the Lancers only up by six, Burnside drove to the basket to start a run and Nelson stole the ball away, finding Diaz for a layup to make it 70-60. CBU kept going to extend its cushion to 14 points.
Still, FPU tried to stay with the visitors, but the Lancers kept rolling and broke the triple digit mark for the first time this season as Mihalko hit two free throws to put her team in front 101-78 before the two teams headed down the stretch.
The Lancers kept rolling and took their largest lead of the night, 115-85, with a minute to play as Elyse Snyder made a jumper off an assist from Brittany Sepeda. FPU managed to cut the margin down into the 20-point range once again but it was too late as CBU grabbed the 117-89 victory.
CBU returns home for its final regular season contest of the year, hosting Notre Dame de Namur Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
