RIVERSIDE, Calif. – For the second night in a row, California Baptist University brought the potential-winning run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth.
Â
But for the second night in a row, Fresno Pacific thwarted the Lancers' comeback, this time holding on for a 6-5 victory Friday night at James W. Totman Stadium. The four-game PacWest series concludes with a nine-and-seven inning doubleheader Saturday slated for a noon start, as CBU and FPU look to build on 14-14, 6-4, and 20-8, 8-6 in conference records, respectively.
Â
Both
Antonio Chavarria (2-for-4) and
Nathan Antoun (2-for-5) had two hits in the game, with Antoun hitting his fourth home run in as many games to give CBU a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning.
Â
Alec Morabito's first hit of the season was an opposite-field solo shot to left center to keep the Lancers' comeback hopes alive in the bottom of the eighth, with the score at 6-5.
After throwing a scoreless top of the ninth,
Andy Crowley led off the bottom of the frame with a perfect drag-bunt single to first base.
Â
Stephen Lohr nearly caught the Sunbirds off guard with another bunt single right after, but a fantastic play from FPU's Michael Hostetler at second turned it into a sacrifice. The Sunbirds went on to record the last two outs for the narrow victory.
Â
Despite being handed his first loss of the season,
Tyson Miller gave CBU another strong outing, coming off consecutive complete games. He gave up eight hits and two walks, but struck out 10 batters through 6.2 innings.
Â
After Fresno Pacific scored four runs to take a 4-2 lead in the sixth, CBU came right back and tied the game after an emotional strike out from Miller ended the top half of the inning. Chavarria and Antoun led off with a single and double, respectively, and
Taylor Wetzel went the other way, sending a liner into right field to score Chavarria.
Â
With two outs and first base open, FPU chose to intentionally walk
Tyler Johnson to set up a double-play scenario. The Sunbirds got what they wanted with a grounder to shortstop, but some great hustle from
Jake Gallaway allowed him to beat out the throw to first and score Antoun to knot the score at 4-4.
Â
The Lancers will come back out and look to salvage a split of the four-game series with Fresno Pacific Saturday, as they will play their eighth game in seven days. Â
