AZUSA, Calif. – Less than 24 hours after surviving a grueling PacWest rivalry match, California Baptist University found itself in the middle of another one Saturday evening at Azusa Pacific.
Despite slow starts in every set, the Lancers battled in unfriendly territory. It was not enough to overcome the Cougars, as they prevailed 24-26, 25-14, 25-23, 25-21 in the Felix Events Center. CBU slipped to 8-2, 1-1 in the PacWest and APU improved to 5-4, 1-0.
Now the Lancers have the chance to play at home in seven of their next eight matches. It starts with Fresno Pacific and Point Loma on Friday and Saturday, respectively, with each match starting at 7 p.m.
Tori Ortman set a new career best with 26 digs in the match for the Lancers. Jordyn Siko finished with 46 assists, nine digs, three kills and two blocks for CBU. Lauren Hackett logged 20 kills for the second night in a row and chipped in eight digs, while Jenna Perry (13) and Lauren Marr (11) each logged double-digit kills. Abbie Gortsema provided seven kills and three blocks.
CBU fell into a 4-0 hole to start the first set and still trailed by four, 8-4, before using an 8-2 run to take a 12-10 lead and force an APU timeout. The Lancers' first run of the match came on two kills each from Gortsema and Hackett.
The Cougars battled back and took a 20-17 lead that prompted a CBU timeout. A 5-1 run – capped by kills from Perry, Marr and a Hackett ace that hit the net and rolled into no-man's land -- gave the Lancers a 22-21 edge.
From there, Marr kills gave CBU set point twice at 24-23 and 25-24. Hackett finished it out on the second chance, finding an empty spot on the floor to slam down a kill for the 26-24 win.
In the second set, the Lancers fell into another early hole, 5-1, and never could recover in a 25-14 loss. Another slow start in the third had CBU in a 5-0 hole, which led to a 9-5 deficit. Two kills from Hackett highlighted a 4-0 run that tied things at 9-9.
APU would find itself back up by three, 16-13, which led to it being in control at 23-21 late. Kills from Perry and Marr kept CBU within one, 24-23, but a huge kill from Mattie Shelford ended a long rally and gave the Cougars the win, 25-23.
CBU trailed 8-4 in set four and then 16-9 in the middle going. The Lancers would not give up and struck fear in the Cougars' crowd when it pulled within 23-20 after consecutive kills from Marr and Gortsema. APU rallied and saw the ball bounce its way en route to a 25-21 win.
