Power Balling

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — The night after the biggest Power Ball lottery, No. 8-ranked California Baptist University looked like it was rolling in the dough. The Lancers powered through to a 108-64 victory over Holy Names.

CBU improves to 15-2 on the year, 6-1 in the PacWest. The win also makes the Lancers 42-1 at home since head coach Rick Croy took the helm in 2013 and extends this year's win streak to six-straight games, including four consecutive games where CBU has scored 100-plus points.

An impressive seven Lancers finished the night with double-digit points, including three with double-doubles. Michael Smith led all scorers with 23 points (9-for-13) and 10 rebounds; Taj Spencer posted 14 points (6-for-12) and 10 rebounds; and Trevone Williams scored 11 points (3-for-10) and grabbed 11 rebounds.

Gelaun Wheelwright finished the night with 16 points (5-for-9) — and six assists — and Jordan Giusti followed with 15 points (5-for-7). Kalidou Diouf rounded out the top scorers for the Lancers with 10 points, two rebounds shy of a double-double.

Marquise Mosley boasted a perfect 5-to-0 assist-to-turnover ratio.

It was the Giusti show to start the game as the senior guard scored the first five points of the night. HNU hung right with CBU, however, cutting the score to just one at 7-6.

It didn't last long, though, as the Lancers scored 13-straight points to jump out in front 20-6. Wheelwright started the run by driving to the basket and then stole the ball away on the next play to put Smith in on a fast break. Spencer capped the run, capitalizing on yet another Hawk turnover, banking in a shot off the glass from Smith.

CBU didn't take its foot off the pedal from there, going on another big run, 10-1, to take its first 20-point margin. Mosley found Spencer wide open under the basket, allowing the senior forward to slam it home.

The more the Lancers seemed to be clicking, the more frustrated the Hawks seemed to get. Smith drew a foul as he was driving to the basket and finished both of his shots at the charity stripe, giving CBU a commanding 66-25 lead just a minute before halftime.

At the break, CBU had scored its highest point total in a single half this year, walking into halftime with a 68-29 upper hand. It was also just six points more than the fewest in a half the Lancers have surrendered in program-history.

The Lancers came out in the second half looking to keep the good times rolling, Spencer drew a foul as he snagged an offensive board to take his spot at the free-throw line. He hit both, giving CBU back its 40-point lead, 77-37.

HNU tried to chip away at the margin, but CBU held firm and looked like it would grab its fourth-straight 100-plus point game even before heading down the stretch. With just under seven minutes to go, Jordan Heading banked in a shot off the backboard to give the Lancers a 96-56 cushion.

It wouldn't happen until the clock broke the five-minute mark, however, as Heading dished out a pass to Williams through traffic on a counter attack. Seconds later, Williams sank a three from distance, extending CBU's margin to 104-58.

The Lancers closed out the remaining minutes keeping the Hawks under control, taking the game 108-64.

CBU turns right around to host rival Azusa Pacific on Saturday, hoping to avenge its earlier one-point road loss. The Lancers and Cougars tip off at 7:00 p.m. in CBU's final home game of January.
