ARROYO GRANDE, Calif. – California Baptist University stood tall on an NCAA Division I stage at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo's Lady Mustang on Saturday.
Halfway through the tournament, the Lancers are in fourth place with a 310 and will look to move up in the second round at the Cypress Ridge Golf Course. CBU trails the tournament leaders and D-I foes Cal Poly and Santa Clara (290) by just 20 shots, and third-place Northern Colorado is just two strokes off at 308.
"It was great for the Lancers to see they can compete with Division I schools," Coach Marc Machado said. "This is a special group that we have at CBU. They work extremely hard, have positive attitudes and they show a lot of heart, especially in the final round."
The Lancers already lead Division I teams like Cal State Northridge (312, fifth), Boise State (318, seventh) and Bakersfield (321, ninth).
"We have a good chance for a solid showing in a Division I tournament tomorrow," Machado said. "If we can continue to have good attitudes, finish our last four holes strong and think our way around these greens then we have a chance at a solid finish."
CBU used its depth to put together a solid first round and used an 81 as its drop score. Samantha Martirez, Natalie Park and Laura Scrivner all tied for the team's low round with 77s apiece with all three tied for 16th.
"I was very proud of Natalie today," Machado said. "She was struggling with her ball striking the last few days and she turned it around when it mattered most. She hit 13 of 14 fairways, which is extremely solid. It's really exciting to watch her because she is starting to believe in herself and realize that she is a top collegiate golfer."
It was Erica Wang who completed the top-four scorers for CBU when she carded a 79 to stand in 24th. Marvi Monsalve was not far off the rest of the team, as she finished with the 81 for 35th.
