SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – A three-bout winning streak, including two technical falls, gave California Baptist University a strong finish to its dual at NCAA Division I Cal Poly on Saturday. The Mustangs were not to be outdone, however, and came away with the 30-13 victory.

Nick Fiegener, Jacob Waste and Paul Head gave the Lancers the final three wins of their dual at Cal Poly. CBU starts the season at 0-2 in dual action, opening the year against two powerful D-I opponents after traveling to Bakersfield last week.

CBU will see how these early challenges pay off next weekend when it travels to Embry-Riddle for a dual and then the Embry-Riddle Open Friday and Saturday in Prescott, Arizona.

The Lancers came close to winning the final four matches on Saturday. Nolan Kistler nearly defeated Cal Poly's Travis Berridge at 174 pounds. Two late escapes brought Kistler back to force a 4-4 tie at the end of regulation. Berridge came up with the takedown and overtime victory to just hold off Kistler from the upset.

At 184 pounds, Fiegener got the Lancers on the board against his former team versus Sohrab Movahedi. A scoreless first period led to Movahedi choosing bottom position to start the second. It turned out to be a big mistake, as Fiegener tallied 10 points on near falls over those few minutes.

Six more near-fall points gave Fiegener the 15-point victory, 16-1, at the 5:34 mark in the third period. Fiegener starts the season at 2-0 against Division I opponents and will look to build on his success.

Waste took charge immediately in the 197 match against JT Goodwin, with a takedown and four-point near fall, for a 6-0 lead in the first period. Waste widened his advantage to 8-0, with a two-point near-fall call, going into the third.

A technical fall victory came on Waste's late flurry in the third period. He quickly executed an escape, takedown and near fall and then let Goodwin up just to grab two more takedowns for the 17-2 win at the 6:34 point in the match.

Head joined Fiegener as the only other Lancer to start his season at 2-0. He defeated Spencer Empey in the heavyweight class, but it was a close call. Empey led 2-0 going into the third period before Head escaped and then came up with a takedown to take a 3-2 edge. Empey hit a reversal to take back his lead, but then Head returned the favor with a late reversal to secure the 5-4 decision victory for himself.

RESULTS
