RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Several seniors put on strong performances for California Baptist University on its Senior Night Monday in the Van Dyne Gym.
Despite those efforts from seniors Jenna Perry, Abbie Gortsema, Jessica Harris, Tori Ortman, and Kristin McCord, the Lancers could not overcome a hot Hawai'i Pacific squad in a four-set loss (25-22, 25-19, 20-25, 25-11).
CBU drops to 20-7, 15-4 in the PacWest but is still strongly in second place in the conference and destined for the NCAA Division II postseason. The Sharks improve to 16-11, 12-6 and continue their playoff push.
Gortsema showed her versatility at middle blocker, with six blocks and four kills on six swings. Perry finished with 13 kills, five digs, two blocks and an ace. Harris added six blocks and three kills, while McCord and Ortman combined for nine digs.
Hawaii Pacific closed out the first set on a 4-1 run to steal the game, 25-22, and then used that momentum to take a two-set lead. The Lancers refused to go away easy and forced a fourth set with a 25-20 win in the third.
Down 17-15 in the third, CBU received two-straight Harris blocks and a Gortsema kill to take the lead, 18-17. Tied at 20-20, consecutive kills from Lauren Hackett and Perry sparked a set-ending 5-0 run for the Lancers.
CBU still has hopes of winning a conference championship, but needs first-place Concordia to lose its final two matches and then needs to defeat Azusa Pacific on the road Saturday at 7 p.m. The NCAA Division II Championship selection show will take place next Monday at 4:30 p.m. PDT, and will reveal the 2016 West Regional host and the seeds for the eight-team tournament.
