ARCATA, Calif. — Since the season started, No. 2-ranked California Baptist University hasn't been full strength with three Lancers battling injuries. Saturday night, CBU had two back in its arsenal and dominated its way to a 93-59 victory over Humboldt State.
CBU improves to 5-2 overall, while the Lumberjacks continue looking for their first win of the season, sitting 0-4 on the young year.
Three Lancers finished in double figures, led by Kamille Diaz with 24 points (9-for-11), eight assists and four steals. Cassidy Mihalko followed with 21 points (9-for-13) and nine rebounds, while Courtney Nelson added 12 points (4-for-8).
"It was a fun game," said Diaz. "Everyone who played, scored the ball and that's what this team is all about. We're happy we were able to come out and get the win, but now our focus is on our next opponent."
As a team, CBU was on fire, shooting 52.2-percent from the field, including 50.0-percent from beyond the arc.
Mihalko started the Lancers off on a 7-0 opening run, scoring all seven points on three different assists – Nelson, Emma Meriggioli and Diaz.
HSU tried to hang with the Lancers, cutting the margin to five points, 14-9, but CBU took its first double-digit lead of the night off a Tori Mitchell layup, 22-11.
With just under a minute and a half before halftime, CBU jumped in front 50-28. Up 41-28, Diaz drained a three-pointer to start the 9-0 spurt. Nelson capped the run with a coast-to-coast layup after grabbing a defensive board.
The Lancers held on for a 52-32 cushion at halftime.
CBU wouldn't take its foot off the pedal and opened the third quarter on a 15-2 run. Diaz bookended the run with two deep three-pointers, putting the Lancers up 67-34.
In the final 10 minutes of the game and very much in control, CBU threatened to take a 40-point lead. Lexy Ram drove to the basket in the final 30 seconds of the game, before HSU scored with a second left to seal the 93-59 victory.
CBU remains on the road, taking on Cal State Dominguez Hills at 1:00 p.m. the day after Thanksgiving in Carson, California. The Lancers are back home for PacWest action, hosting rival Azusa Pacific on Dec. 3 at 5:00 p.m.
