RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Without a fourth starting pitcher solidified, Saturdays have been interesting for California Baptist University the past three weeks. Even with a series win already secured, the Lancers knew this Saturday would be a battle in their PacWest series finale with Holy Names.
Â
Nevertheless, CBU came away with its third series sweep of the season in a 13-5 win over the Hawks at Totman Stadium. The Lancers improve to 17-5, 7-1 in conference to remain on top of the PacWest. HNU drops to 4-17, 2-6.
Â
"It takes the whole team, the way we're rolling it takes the whole team,"
A.J. David said. "We have a lot of depth and it takes every last guy to come through for us to get a win."
Â
David led CBU with a 5-for-5 game at the plate in which he finished a double shy of the cycle. He drove in four runs and scored three times.
Ryan Williams continued to showcase his power, with a 3-for-5 game, with three runs, that included a two-run homer and a double.
Â
"I was seeing the ball well and staying with the same approach every at-bat," David said. "I wasn't changing my approach, the score didn't matter."
Â
Stephen Lohr and
Taylor Wetzel both went 2-for-4 at the plate. Lohr drove in three runs and scored twice, with a double, while Wetzel had a double and RBI of his own.
Â
Despite the eight-run margin, it was the closest game of the series. CBU jumped out to a 3-0 lead through the fourth, but Holy Names tied things up with a three-run top of the fifth. The Lancers responded with a four-run bottom half, with all of the runs unearned.
Â
Andrew Montoya reached first on a throwing error at shortstop to start the rally for CBU. A David single put the Lancers back in front, 4-3, and a
Tyler Johnson single loaded the bases for a
Mark Sanchez sacrifice fly that would not have been possible without the error to start the frame. A wild pitch and RBI double from Wetzel capped the explosive inning, with CBU up 7-3.
Â
In the sixth, the Hawks cut their deficit down to two, 7-5, before CBU pulled away for good with a four-run sixth and two-run seventh.
Â
Three-straight hits — a Williams single and doubles from Montoya and Lohr — gave the Lancers a 9-5 lead on the final hit of the spurt. David then cleared the bases with his two-run homer to right. Williams' two-run shot to left field ended the scoring in the eighth, 13-5.
Â
Now, CBU will get ready for Hawaii as the Lancers next travel to the islands to take on PacWest foes Hawaii Hilo and Hawaii Pacific. The Vulcans host CBU Wednesday to Friday and the Sharks play host March 22-24.
Â
"I'm excited, I've never been," Davis said of the Hawaii trip. "I am looking forward to getting out there and see if we can't come away with seven or eight wins."
