KANEOHE, Hawaii – With a lead in the PacWest title race, an impressive win streak and fresh new top-10 ranking in NCAA Division II, California Baptist University carries a big target on its back into every series.
Hawaii Pacific took aim at the Lancers to open a four-game PacWest set on Tuesday at Hans L'Orange Park. The Sharks scored the first run, but CBU broke through with a four-run sixth to claim a 4-1 victory.
The 10th-ranked Lancers, who are also tied for the No. 1 spot in the NCBWA West Region rankings, have now won 10-straight games and 16 of their last 17 to improve to 22-5, 12-1 in conference. HPU slips to 15-8, 7-6 with a doubleheader between the two up next on Wednesday at 7 p.m. PDT.
It took some time for CBU's offense to get moving against Hawaii Pacific's ace pitcher Rico Garcia. A one-out walk to Antonio Chavarria opened the door for the Lancers in the sixth. Stephen Lohr followed that with a single to left field and an A.J. David walk loaded the bases, still with one out.
Tyler Johnson tied the game with a run-scoring grounder to second base. An error kept the bases jammed with just the one out. Bryce Macy singled into left to give CBU a 2-1 lead, and Jake Gallaway ended the scoring with a two-run double into the left-center gap.
While the Sharks had their ace on the mound, so did CBU. Tyson Miller won the dual with Garcia, as the junior right-handed pitcher threw seven quality innings. He struck out seven batters and allowed just five hits, two walks and the one run.
Chavarria picked up the save for CBU, throwing a spotless bottom of the ninth. He came out of the bullpen with a runner on first and no outs, getting two grounders, including a game-ending 6-4-3 double play ball. Brody Robinson earned the hold out of the pen, allowing just one walk in one inning for the Lancers.
Offensively, Macy went 2-for-4 overall. David (2-for-3) joined him as the other Lancer with multiple hits. CBU had eight hits, with Johnson and Morabito (double) providing the other base knocks.Â
