Explosive Start to Playoffs

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – If there was ever a time to set a program record for home runs in a game, the first round of the playoffs was a pretty good time to do it.

California Baptist University did exactly that with six home runs in a 14-0 win over Cal State East Bay on in the opening day of the NCAA Division II West Regional on Thursday. It set a modern-era record for the Lancers after besting the two four-homer games they enjoyed this year.

"We told the team, you can't win the tournament on day one and you can't lose it on day one, and you can't bank the runs," Coach Gary Adcock said. "We are excited about the result, but we also know tomorrow we start all over again at 0-0."

Ryan Williams led the way for CBU with two home runs and six runs batted in during a 4-for-5 performance that included two runs of his own. A.J. David followed with a 3-for-5 showing that included two runs and a solo homer. Bryce Macy was 2-for-4 with two runs and a homer, while DJ Porter and Jake Gallaway (two runs) were each 1-for-3 with solo shots, as well.

"One hit leads to another and they build on each other," Williams said. "It gives us confidence when we are hitting home runs, and as a team we trust each other for the next guy to get the hit, so you start clicking it's easy to keep clicking."

The top-seeded host and eighth-ranked Lancers improve to 40-11 and advance in the winner's bracket to play the loser of third or fourth seeded Cal Poly Pomona and Chico State's game Thursday at 7 p.m. CBU will face the Broncos or Wildcats Friday at 3 p.m. Cal State East Bay drops to 33-21 and will play 10th-ranked Dixie State in an elimination game Friday at 11 a.m.

"The game changes when a new guy gets on the mound," Adcock said. "We are going to let this one go, we are excited about playing at home, that's a benefit. We are built for this park, we play at this park and we hope that can carry us through tomorrow, as well."

Tyson Miller threw six shutout innings on less than 80 pitches in which he allowed just six base runners (four hits, two walks) and struck out two. Stephen Carajabal picked up the nine-out save, allowing just three hits and striking out three in three innings.

"I just wanted to take it a pitch at a time and not make it more than what it is," Miller said. "The approach never changed for our hitters, they just tried to stay on barrel at all times, and I just wanted to keep getting us back in the dugout.

"I try not to let the lead change me mentally, but I appreciate the offense giving me those six runs and staying on top."

The Lancers got out to an unreal start, jumping out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning on six hits. David sparked the rally with a one-out single into center field and Stephen Lohr doubled to put two in scoring position.

Antonio Chavarria brought home the first run with a sacrifice fly to center field, while Mark Sanchez made it a two-out rally with an RBI single into left center. Williams then homered to the opposite field to make it 4-0 CBU, and DJ Porter made it back-to-back homers with a line-drive shot to left center.

Despite the inning ending, the Lancers' home-run trot did not, as Jake Gallaway led off the second inning with a line drive off the left-field foul pole for CBU's third homer in two innings and a 6-0 lead.

Williams extended the lead to 9-0 in the fifth with his second home run of the game going for three runs after Lohr and Sanchez walked earlier in the inning. Solo dingers hit back-to-back from Macy and David made it 11-0 in the sixth inning.

"We had an approach as a team, coach always gives us a great approach, so we just stuck with it," Williams said. "We didn't want to change to them, we wanted to make them change themselves and stick with what we know to do."

There was more insurance to be had for the Lancers, as they scored three more runs in the bottom of the eighth for a 14-0 advantage. The bases were loaded with no outs on a Gallaway walk and singles from Macy and David. Lohr hit a sacrifice fly to center field for the first run, while Sanchez and Williams both hit two-out singles to cap the scoring.
