DAVIS, Calif. – There won't be any surprises awaiting California Baptist University in 2016 after its grueling non-conference schedule continued Saturday at UC Davis' Aggie Roundup. The Lancers faced off against two top-17 ranked teams in the NCAA -- No. 3 Cal and 17th-ranked San Jose State.
CBU came close to grabbing the win over the Spartans by forcing overtime, but ultimately dropped 12-10. It came after falling to the Bears 15-5 earlier Saturday at the Schaal Aquatics Center. The No. 16 Lancers are 3-6 going into two games next week, while Cal is undefeated at 5-0 and San Jose State starts out at 2-1.
A road-home split has CBU facing eighth-ranked UC Irvine on the road Wednesday at 7 p.m. and then opening at home Friday against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, the No. 2 team in Division III, at 3 p.m.
Brent Teraoka scored a game-high six goals against San Jose State, while Joseph Moorman put up 18 saves in the cage for CBU. Teraoka scored the first four goals for the Lancers, which led into a 3-1 run in the second quarter that gave them a 5-4 lead at halftime.
Tied at 6-6 going into the fourth quarter, Teraoka gave CBU a 7-6 edge when he scored with 3:49 to play. The Spartans answered back, but Teddy Forte's one goal of the game kept the Lancers in front, 8-7, with 2:21 remaining. San Jose State managed to force overtime with 51 seconds left in regulatoin, and then went on a 3-0 run to wrap up the result in overtime.
Earlier Saturday morning, CBU concluded its top-four tour of the NCAA with a matchup against No. 3 Cal after taking on fourth-ranked Pacific on Friday.
Moorman ended up with 16 saves and three steals in the game. Five different players: Thomas Henline, Ryan Sargis, Logan Mena, Luke Schuler and Dominick Nevarez scored in the game. Henline and Mena each added a steal, while Schuler chipped in an assist. Elad Gunya wound up with two steals and an assist, while Teraoka finished with an assist and a steal.
