SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — With an undefeated conference record on the line, No. 10-ranked California Baptist University can't afford to take a night off. The Lancers improved to a perfect 10-0 in the PacWest and extended their winning streak to 16-straight games after posting a 98-77 win at Dominican University of California Saturday night.
It moves CBU to 19-2 overall and keeps the Lancers' PacWest record unblemished to stay atop the conference standings. The Penguins drop to 10-9 on the year, 6-6 in conference.
Five Lancers finished the night in double figures, led by Cassidy Mihalko's double-double. The senior guard had 24 points (7-for-13) and 14 rebounds, including 10 defensive boards.
"I was proud of how we stuck together as a team and kept our heads when they were making some big shots in the first half," said Mihalko. "We stuck to our game plan, focused on defense and rebounding and just trusted the process to stick it out and came out with a great team win!"
Kamille Diaz and Courtney Nelson (6-for-12) each chipped in 16 points. Diaz dished out five assists and had three steals, while Nelson finished with six assists and two steals, along with a block. Olivia Weber had a solid night coming off the bench with 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting. Erin Asher rounded out the quintet with 10 points.
While just off double-digit points with eight on the night, Tori Mitchell grabbed 12 boards to help the Lancers out-rebound the Penguins 46-to-43.
CBU jumped out to a 12-3 lead to force a Penguin timeout three minutes into the game. Diaz hit two free throws to get the run going and Mihalko capped the spurt with a layup off a Nelson assist.
Dominican came storming back in it, however, and boasted a 25-19 cushion heading into the second quarter. That turned into an uncharacteristic 10-point deficit for the Lancers a minute into the second.
The Lancers didn't stress and slowly chipped away at the margin until a 7-1 run – fueled by an Asher trey, Weber jumper and Lexy Ram layup – put the visitors back in front, 42-41.
It remained close for the final two minutes of the quarter, but a Ram buzzer-beating shot from beyond the arc gave CBU a 51-47 upper hand at halftime.
CBU came out of the break looking for some separation and got it quickly. The Lancers opened the frame on an 8-0 run to take back their double-digit lead, 59-47. Mihalko sparked the spurt with a layup and two chances at the line, before Nelson scored on back-to-back layups.
It didn't let up from there as the Lancers continued to push tempo.
With two and a half minutes left in the third, a Diaz-to-Nelson connection increased CBU's lead to 20 points, 75-55. Asher followed with a coast-to-coast layup after snatching up a defensive board to keep momentum building for the Lancers.
Dominican tried to contain CBU in the final period, but couldn't seem to cut the margin under 15 points.
The birthday girl, Kristine Sellona, found Weber just inside the perimeter and followed with two chances at the charity stripe to threaten a 30-point lead for the Lancers, 98-71, with not much time left on the clock.
Dominican scored six points in the final two minutes, but it wasn't enough to overcome CBU as it took the 98-77 victory.
The Lancers continue their trip up north, heading to Fresno Pacific for a Monday tip at 5:30 p.m.
