HONOLULU — In its final game in Hawai'i, No. 11-ranked California Baptist University dominated the glass (48-to-29) to take a 111-77 victory over Chaminade Thursday night. It was the most points CBU had scored since 2015.
The Lancers continue on their winning streak, extending it to 12-straight games, and improve to 15-2 overall. CBU remains undefeated in the PacWest with a 6-0 mark, sitting on top of the leader board. The Silverswords drop to 1-11 on the year, 1-6 in conference with the loss.
CBU found itself down 7-2 early, but didn't worry. Courtney Nelson found an open lane to bank in the tying shot and Olivia Weber finished two chances at the line to give CBU the go-ahead points, 11-9. Cassidy Mihalko kept the run going with two free throws of her own before Chaminade managed to string together five-consecutive points.
Coach Jarrod Olson called a timeout to regroup his team and Lexy Ram drained back-to-back shots from beyond the arc to put the Lancers back in front, 21-19. Five points from Kamille Diaz kept the run going as CBU closed out the first quarter with a 28-24 lead.
Mihalko got the second off to a strong start, scoring the first three buckets, to give CBU its first double-digit lead of the night, 34-24.
The Lancers kept the offensive pressure on thick and walked into halftime with a 58-42 cushion, closing the last minute and a half out on a 6-2 run. Diaz, Mihalko and Erin Asher each got in on the scoring to give their team the 16-point upper hand.
Things only picked up from there as CBU quickly built its lead up to 20-point range. Emma Meriggioli bounced a pass through traffic to find Nelson sprinting through the key for an easy layup. Mihalko followed with a fast-break bucket after stealing the ball away and banking it in off the glass, 67-45.
Chaminade called a timeout, but soon the Lancers threatened a 30-point margin.
With just about four minutes left in the third, Ram knocked in a three-pointer from the corner to put CBU up 75-48. The 30-point lead came in the Lancers' next possession, though, as Asher drained a triple of her own, 78-48.
CBU kept its distance, 87-59, looking to close out the final 10 minutes strong. The Silverswords kept fighting, however, not letting the Lancers coast in the fourth.
After Chaminade cut the margin back down into the 20-point range – and threatened to slice it even more, 98-75, halfway through the period – Kristine Sellona found nothing-but-net from three-point range to put the Lancers back in front by 30 with a 109-77 lead.
CBU controlled the final minute of play to take the 111-77 victory.
The Lancers return to the Mainland with two wins in tow, hoping to carry momentum into next week. CBU takes on rival Azusa Pacific on the road on Thursday before hosting Concordia University of Irvine on Saturday.
