RIVERSIDE, Calif. – It was a showdown of some talented post players in California Baptist University's second and final game of the CBU Conference Challenge.

Center Tori Mitchell matched her career high for points in a game, with 21 in just 19 minutes, but it was not enough to overcome UC San Diego, the favorite to win the California Collegiate Athletic Association, in a 78-64 loss on Saturday. The Lancers' record moves to 1-1 to start the year, while the Tritons improve to 2-0.

There was depth to the Lancers' offense, as forward Blaysen Varnadoe put together her first double-double with the Lancers, with 16 points, 11 rebounds and two steals. Lexy Ram nearly had a double-double of her own, with nine points and nine rebounds.

CBU turns right back around and plays Simon Fraser on Monday at 7 p.m. at the CBU Events Center before beginning a six-game stretch on the road.

Saturday was tightly contested in the first half. Both teams played their way to a 9-9 tie, but an 8-3 run gave UCSD a 17-12 lead with 2:21 to play in the first quarter. The Lancers responded and ended the quarter on a 9-0 run to take a 21-17 lead into the second quarter, thanks to jump shots from Ane Olaeta (seven points, four rebounds), Ram, a three-pointer from Akayla Hackson and Mitchell layup.

Varnadoe opened the second quarter with a three-pointer and then made a layup not long after to push CBU's lead to 26-19 a minute and a half into the second. The Tritons turned things around and closed out the first half strong for a 43-35 lead.
