ST. GEORGE, Utah — With the chance to set a new program record for longest winning streak on the line Saturday night, No. 6-ranked California Baptist University answered the call and came out on fire for an 85-68 win over Dixie State.
While the Lancers may have been lights out, it really was lights out in the Burns Arena as DSU lost power throughout campus about 45 minutes before the game was originally slated to start.
It pushed the game back 30 minutes, but it didn't faze the Lancers as they picked up their 22
nd-straight victory – a new program record – to improve to 25-2 overall and remain undefeated in the PacWest at 16-0. The Trailblazers drop to 4-18, 4-12 with the loss.
Cassidy Mihalko led all scorers with 21 points (6-for-10) and four steals on the night.
Erin Asher followed with 13 points (4-for-5).
Kamille Diaz (4-for-8) and
Olivia Weber (4-for-9) each chipped in 11 points, while Diaz boasted an impressive 8-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio in the win.
Tori Mitchell was just on the verge of double figures with nine points (4-for-7), also grabbing two steals and blocking a shot.
"This is a special group we have and having five seniors, we want to leave a lasting mark," said Diaz. "Accomplishing this – breaking the record – as a group together is something special and says a lot about this team."
CBU opened on a 6-2 run to take the first lead of the night and didn't look back from there.
Courtney Nelson got the scoring going with a layup off a Mihalko assist, before Mihalko finished two chances at the line to cap the spurt.
The Trailblazers battled back and even tied the game at 14-14, but the Lancers closed out the first quarter with five-straight points to keep in front. Diaz drained a three and Mihalko banked in a jumper in that span to put CBU in front 19-14 after the first 10 minutes.
Momentum carried over into the second as CBU opened the frame on a 4-0 run to extend the run to nine-straight points. Mitchell hit a free throw to threaten the first double-digit lead of the night, 23-14, with eight and a half minutes left before halftime.
It came halfway through the quarter as Diaz drained a deep three to put the Lancers in front 29-19. CBU went on to outscore the Trailblazers 21-to-11 in the second, boasting a 40-25 cushion at the break.
CBU didn't take its foot off the pedal in the second half, soon pushing its lead into 20-point territory. Diaz found a wide open
Emma Meriggioli (four assists) on the perimeter for a nothing-but-net triple to put the Lancers up 55-36 with just under five minutes left in the third.
The Lancer defense held firm as the offense took care of business on the other end of the court, as the visitors extended their lead to 23 points, 60-27, as Weber posted up under the basket.
Heading into the final 10 minutes with a 67-42 lead, it looked like there was no stopping CBU.
The Lancers kept hot from three-point range – finishing the half 10-for-18 from the perimeter – to keep their distance. Even Weber, who doesn't usually take shots from beyond the arc, got in on the action, 70-44.
CBU looked like it might take a 30-point advantage, 79-51, but the Trailblazers managed to keep the margin down.
DSU didn't quit, but it wasn't enough to overcome CBU as it took the game 85-68.
The Lancers have three more games on the road – next week in the Bay Area and then at Concordia University of Irvine on Thursday, Feb. 23 – before closing out the regular season at home on Feb. 25, hosting Point Loma for a 5:00 p.m. tip off.
