Lancers Stay Hot in Chilly Doubleheader

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – A little snow and temperatures that dipped into the low 30s and even high 20s was not enough to cool off California Baptist University, which proved unbeatable for the ninth game in a row at Colorado Mesa on Friday.

An offensive onslaught led by Tommy Bell, Ryan Williams and Michael Mora led the 14th-ranked Lancers to their ninth-straight win in an 8-5 victory over the No. 12 Mavericks. Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end, as CBU had its winning streak stopped in a 6-2 loss to CMU in the finale of Friday's doubleheader.

Both CBU and Colorado Mesa will play one more game on Saturday, which has been pushed back an hour to a 12 p.m. PDT start when temperatures are projected to rise to 39 degrees. The Lancers go into tomorrow with a 9-4 record, while the Mavericks are 6-5.

Overall, Bell batted 4-for-7 on Friday, with two runs batted in and two more scored. John Glenn, Bryce Macy, Ryan Williams and Michael Mora also had two-hit days for the Lancers.

In the day's opener, there were two lead changes in the first four innings, but things turned in CBU's favor for good with a five-run top of the sixth.

Bell started the rally with a leadoff single and stolen base, while Williams walked aboard and tagged up to second, while Bell took third on a fly ball in deep, foul territory. Tyler Johnson plated both Bell and Williams with a single past a diving first baseman and through the right side.

Mora kept the rally going with a first-pitch double into right field, while Nick Plaia walked to load the bases with one out. Alfredo Rodriguez was hit by a pitch to bring in the third run of the inning and Macy scored two more with a first-place single into left to give CBU a 7-3 lead.

Colorado Mesa pulled within two, 7-5, with a two-run eighth, but an RBI double from Bell gave the Lancers another insurance run, 8-5, in the ninth. It was more than enough for Andrew Bernstein, who picked up his first save of the season by shutting down the Mavericks over the final 1.1 innings on just 11 pitches.

CMU took a 1-0 lead in the second inning, but Bell, who went 3-for-5 in the game, tied the score at 1-1 with a leadoff homer in the top of the fourth. Williams singled on a 2-2 pitch and stole second and then third to keep the inning going. In his first career start, Mora came through in the clutch with a two-out RBI single to give the Lancers a 2-1 edge and finish the game going 2-for-3.

In the finale, the Mavericks took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second, but an RBI single from Macy made it 2-1 in the top of the third. CMU scored four more times in the bottom of the third to grab a 6-1 lead. Glenn gave the Lancers another run with a no-doubt, solo homer in the sixth.

It proved to be the final run of the day, as CBU's Matt Amrhein made his second appearance of the season and threw 5.1 scoreless innings to shut down the Mav's offense. The true freshman scattered four hits, one walk and struck out three to maintain his spotless earned-run average on the year.
