Seniors Celebrate In Style

RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- Late-game heroics fueled California Baptist University to two one-run wins and a Senior Day sweep of Hawai'i Hilo on Friday.

With five seniors playing their final regular-season games at Totman Stadium, the Lancers came through with 9-8 and 2-1 wins over the Vulcans. It secured not only the doubleheader but series sweep of UHH, as CBU improved to a 31-15 overall record, 22-10 in conference. Hawai'i Hilo returns home with an 8-24, 8-22 record.

The seniors certainly did their part on Friday. Tommy Bell led the team with five hits on the day, batting .625 (5-for-8) with two runs batted in. Brian Ruhm and Zack Norris also came up with base hits for the Lancers in their final day at Totman to help end the home season on a high note for fellow seniors Tyler Johnson and Brad Rinehart.

"This means a lot, for us to come out and get two wins and keep our playoff hopes alive, shows it was a good day," Ruhm said. "We had good energy all day, it was a long day, but we knew we had a break coming up so we left it all on the field.

"We've been getting better all season, and it's coming together at the right time. We are in a playoff push and there's no better time for us to be playing like this."

The Lancers have next week off before ending the season at Concordia University of Irvine. The series beings Monday, May 1, at 3 p.m. and continues with a Tuesday doubleheader at noon before wrapping up Wednesday at 3 p.m.

Several CBU freshmen came up with big performances, as well, on Friday. True freshman John Glenn was 4-for-8 with six runs batted in and two-extra base hits on the day. He drove in the winning run in both games, using a walk-off, two-run homer to secure the 9-8 victory in the opener.

"Today was a fun experience, I've never hit a walk-off home run before," Glenn said. "It definitely means a lot, with it being Senior Day, I'm glad I could make it great for them."

Andrew Bash threw a seven-inning complete game in the finale and also had a hit in the opener. The redshirt freshman allowed four hits, one walk and struck out five in the victory.

Junior Bryce Macy had three hits Friday and helped set up the game two win with a leadoff double in the bottom of the sixth before coming around to score on a grounder from Glenn.

Hawai'i Hilo led for most of Friday's opener and scored four runs over the sixth to eighth innings to lead 8-6 going into the bottom of the eighth. CBU pulled within a run in the frame after two walks and a hit by pitch loaded the bases for a Luke Navigato sacrifice fly.

A one-out single from Bell got the ball rolling in the ninth for the Lancers. Glenn went the other way on a 1-1 pitch and sent it out of the park to left field to secure the 9-8 win before he was mobbed at the plate by his teammates.

"As soon as I touched first base, I just got the chills," Glenn said. "It was great seeing everyone at home.

"The seniors have helped me a lot and taught me a lot of things as the season went along, I probably wouldn't be doing as well as I am without them."

A day after picking up his first career save, true freshman Matt Amrhein logged his third win of the year after throwing the final 1.2 innings in which he allowed just a walk and hit by pitch.

It was a back and forth game early on, the Lancers tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the first on an RBI single and double from Bell and Glenn, respectively. A leadoff double from Macy and Glenn two-out single pulled CBU within one, 4-3, of the Vulcans in the third.

Three runs in the fifth gave the Lancers a 6-4 lead. Ryan Williams started the inning with a double and scored on a single from Bell. DJ Porter then blasted a two-run homer to put CBU ahead for the first time in the game.

Both offenses were held in check in the final game of the series. UHH scored in the top of the first and the Lancers answered in the bottom half on a double from Macy and single from Glenn to tie the game, 1-1.

The bottom of the sixth started the same exact way, as Macy doubled to left center and then moved to third on a Bell single. Glenn scored Macy with a fielder's choice grounder to second to give his team the 2-1 lead.

"We are in the playoff push, every game is its own entity," Glenn said. "We are playing with the same energy all the time."

Senior Day was not only about the wins, but was a time for the seniors to reflect on their time at CBU.

"I've had a great time all around, as a student, religiously, spiritually and athletically -- it's the whole package and it's been a big part of my life," Ruhm said. "I've learned a lot; baseball tests you a lot. I think I've learned how to be a better person. I've learned a lot of life lessons along the way and I think I'll take them with me as I get older."
