LAS VEGAS – California Baptist University took part in its first dual meet of the season, and the Lancers learned a lot while pushing UNLV in a 187-108 loss at the Jim Reitz Pool on Saturday.
"UNLV is a deep, talented team and have some skilled freshman," Coach Rick Rowland said. "We are young and our newer swimmers are learning to compete at this level, but we'll be race ready by February. They learned a lot about racing and pacing today."
Emily Longfellow continued her impressive start to the year with another win for the Lancers. It came in the 400-yard individual medley as her time of four minutes, 33.23 seconds led the Lancers' top-four finishers. Morgan Giordano (4:39.81), Alina Jungklaus (4:41.80) and Alexa Melara (4:55.33) took second through fourth in the event to score a total of 16 team points for CBU.
"It was an exciting race, Emily held the lead the whole race and fought off a few challengers in the end," said Rowland, as UNLV's Gaby Tellez touched in 4:33.88 before being disqualified.
A victory from the Lancers' 400-free relay team of Mergel, Hannah Parson, Rita Smirnova and Grace Oeser ended the day. The group won the event in 3:35.11.
Rebeca Oviedo and Mergel locked up second and third place, respectively, in both the 200 and 500 frees for CBU. Oviedo clocked in at 1:54.18 in the 200 free and 5:07.15 in the 500, while Mergel posted times of 1:54.84 and 5:10.78.
Buse Topcu added another runner-up finish for the Lancers in the 1650 free (17:46.82). CBU received two more individual third-place swims from Longfellow in the 100 back (57.36) and Robin Smallwood in the 100 breast (1:07.56).
The Lancers will next host Pomona-Pitzer for a dual on Friday at 2:30 p.m.
