RIVERSIDE, Calif. –
With duals on back-to-back days, California Baptist University used a non-conference dual with Pomona-Pitzer on Friday afternoon as an opportunity to mix things up. The Lancers were pleased with the result in a 187-107 win over the Sagehens at the Lancer Aquatics Center.

"I like where we're at. I feel like we are looking really fit in the water more than anything. This is a dual meet where everyone swam four events," Coach Rick Rowland said. "We saw consistency across the board, and we had endurance throughout the meet."

CBU next heads to CSU Bakersfield for another dual with a Western Athletic Conference opponent tomorrow at noon.

Friday could not have started much better for CBU, as it took first and second in the 200-medley relay. The Lancers' top-two teams were separated by just .06 of a second. Matt Amano, Ryan Schade, Josh Fluetsch and Payton Thomas won the event in one minute, 33.23 seconds, just in front of their teammates Robert Moseley, Scott Tolman, David Miller and Justin Quiroga (1:33.29).

CBU swept the top-four places in the 200 free and the top-three spots in the 50 freestyle. Quiroga (1:41.02), Colton Babcock (1:42.11), Matthew Niculae (1:44.91) and Dylan Sweikert (1:45.62) led the way in the 200, while Jerome Heidrich (21.02), Jacob Leahy (21.10), Brandon Schuster (21.14) and Tolman (21.50) did so in the 50.

The Lancers also had the first and second-place swimmers in the 100 back and 200 breast. Josh Walters (50.47) and Moseley (50.94) went one-two in the backstroke, while Sean Foster (2:07.34) and Schade (2:13.97) did so in the breast.

Schuster picked up two individual wins in the 100 breast (56.51) and 500 free (4:37.08), taking the distance freestyle by more than eight seconds over the runner-up, Sweikert (4:45.31).

"Brandon going 56 in the breast was really good, he has been working that stroke really hard in practice and it showed today," Rowland said. "He swam a lot of different events for us, he went right from the breast and into the 50 free and had a great time. He is a true medley swimmer, you can throw him in any event."

The Lancers also swept first through third on both boards, thanks to Garret Chew, Zane Freeman and Tyler Stevens.

"Tyler had a great performance, he secured us a top-three finish on both boards," Dive Coach Jeff Couto said. "If Zane and Garret continue to do compete as they have been doing, the Lancers diving team is going to produce some big points on the board at the WAC Championship. Our aim is to be the best diving team in the WAC and the athletes continue to work towards that lofty goal."

CBU added victories in the 100 free from Heidrich (46.24), 200 fly from Miller (1:54.36) and 200 back from Moseley (1:51.51).

"This was a great chance for some of the younger guys to go out and get some wins to build their confidence," Rowland said.

Moseley and Tolman also swam the 200 individual medley as an exhibition swim but posted times of 1:54.35 and 1:55.12, respectively, that would have been good for first and second place. It was the same story for Quiroga (50.13) and Walters (51.69) in the 100 fly.

The Lancers used the 200-free relay as another exhibition, but would have had the top-two teams again. Babcock, Fluetsch, Kyle White and Walters posted a low time of 1:26.75, while Adityastha Wratsangka, Thomas, Sweikert and Heidrich's time of 1:27.53 would have been good for second.
