COLUMBIA, Mo. – A strong final day moved California Baptist University up to a seventh-place finish out of 13 teams at the Mizzou Invite on Saturday.
The Lancers' strongest showing of the day and perhaps the meet was in the 1650-yard freestyle. Six CBU swimmers placed in the top-25, with Rebeca Oviedo and Buse Topcu leading the group. Oviedo took fifth place in 16 minutes, 43.17 seconds to finish just hundredths of a second in front of Topcu in sixth place (16:43.65).
Alina Jungklaus (17:22.84) and Grace Oeser (17:31.53) finished 15th and 17th, respectively, while Morgan Giordano (23rd, 17:52.19) and Mallory Brubaker (25th, 18:06.17) rounded out the top 25. It helped CBU move up from eighth place in a loaded field that included 23rd-ranked Arkansas and host Missouri, which is receiving votes in the NCAA top-25 rankings. BYU, Florida International, Drury, Southern Illinois, McKendree, and Oklahoma Baptist were also in attendance this week.
In the final event of the day, the Lancers 400-free relay team of Mckenzie Kelly, Rita Smirnova, Hannah Parson and Oviedo took 12th place in 3:26.71, missing out on the top ten by less than a second. A second CBU relay team composed of Grace Oeser, Emily Longfellow, Jungklaus and Jenna Washburn finished in 18th with a time of 3:29.23, missing out on the top-15 by less than one second.
The Lancers will return to action in a month's time when they host the two-day Lancer Swim/Dive Invitational on December 14-15.
