SAN DIEGO – For the fourth time in five games, Britney Thomas logged a double-double with 28 points and 13 rebounds for California Baptist University at the San Diego State Thanksgiving Classic on Friday.
The host Aztecs still pulled out the 83-67 victory to improve to 4-1 against the Lancers (1-4). CBU plays one more game this weekend, taking on Brigham Young Saturday at 5 p.m. at SDSU.
Thomas' double-double, which included a block, steal and assist, came in just 24 minutes. The junior shot 11-20 from the field and 6-7 from the free-throw line. The forward's 28 points are tied for the 16th most in an NCAA-era game for CBU, while her rebounds are just three outside the top-13 over that span.
Georgia Dale added nine points, four assists, three rebounds and two steals for CBU. Lexy Ram and Delacy Brown both scored seven points for the Lancers, who also received six points, seven assists and five rebounds from Emma Meriggioli.
CBU held a 23-20 lead at the end of the first quarter after opening the game on an 11-6 run. Thomas led the Lancers with eight points and five rebounds in the first quarter. The Aztecs rebounded in the second quarter and took a 45-28 lead at halftime.
The Lancers managed to cut into their deficit by winning the third quarter, and then pulled all the way within 11 of San Diego State, 71-60, with 6:34 to play. CBU opened the fourth quarter on a 10-5 run, thanks to seven points from Thomas and a Brown three-pointer.
