RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Five Lancers scored in double figures, as California Baptist University used a dominant second half to win its third-straight game on a 93-71 margin over Fresno Pacific on Saturday afternoon in the CBU Events center.
A number of Lancers put up career-highs in the win, with Tiena Afu and Lexy Ram both collecting double-doubles. Delacy Brown, Georgia Dale and Britney Thomas each scored in double figures for CBU, too.
After seeing its lead cut down to two in the second quarter, the Lancers pulled away for good with a 27-5 run that went from the second quarter late into the third quarter. Three-point shooting was crucial in that large run, as CBU connected on seven three-pointers over that span.
"This was a good win for us today," Coach Jarrod Olson said. "We did a really nice job of moving the ball to start the third quarter."
Ram put up career-highs in points (18) and rebounds (10) to go along with three assists, while Afu scored 16 on 7-for-9 shooting from the field and secured a career-high 15 rebounds and three blocks.
Dale scored a career-high 19 points on 4-of-9 shooting from three, and also had three assists and two steals. Brown notched 14 points, five rebounds and logged a career-high six assists. Britney Thomas put up 10 points and six rebounds in 16 minutes of action, as well.
"Lexy, Delacy and Georgia all hit from three, and Tiena did a nice job inside for us," Olson said.
The Lancers took control of the game immediately and held a 17-7 lead at the end of the first quarter. CBU started the game on a 9-2 run, as Ane Olaeta scored seven points in the first four minutes.
CBU stretched its lead to as many as 11 (15-4) on a 6-0 run that included field goals from Dale, Afu and Brown.
The Sunbirds made a run and whittled their deficit all the way down to 27-25 with 2:32 to be played in the first half. The Lancers closed out the second quarter on an 8-0 run, though, to lead 35-25 at half. Thomas started the run with a layup, while consecutive three-pointers from Brown and Dale added to it.
CBU's three-point shooting only heated up from there, as it hit six shots from deep in the third quarter to pull away for good. Thomas started a 17-0 Lancers' run with a strong putback after an off-target three, and CBU couldn't seem to miss from there.
The Lancers made five-straight threes, with two coming from Brown and Ram and another from Meriggioli to go up 54-30 less than five minutes into the third quarter.
Going into the fourth quarter, CBU's lead was up to 19 (63-44) after Brown and Ram erupted for nine and eight points, respectively, in the third quarter.
CBU won the fourth quarter, as well, to wrap up the 93-71 victory. It is the Lancers' seventh-straight win over the Sunbirds, a former PacWest Conference foe. CBU improves to 4-6 and FPU drops to 6-4.
The Lancers will meet another former PacWest foe next Saturday when Notre Dame de Namur visits the CBU Events Center for a 1 p.m. tipoff.
