SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — Coming into Thursday's game, No. 19-ranked California Baptist University had been on a roll with eight-straight victories. While it didn't come easy, the Lancers kept that streak going with an 83-71 win over Dominican University of California.
The Lancers improve to 23-4 overall, 16-3 in the PacWest. The Penguins drop to 5-21 on the year, 4-15 in conference.
Kalidou Diouf, who has averaged 20 points per game over the last eight games, led CBU with 28 points on the night (14-for-19). He also grabbed 11 rebounds to grab his 11th double-double of the year.
Bul Kuol (6-for-7) and Jordan Heading each chipped in 13 points, with Heading dishing out a game-high seven assists. Ty Rowell (2-for-5) rounded out the Lancers in double figures with 10 points.
CBU, which ranks fourth in Division II in rebounding margin, out-rebounded Dominican 39-to-32.
Diouf won the tip for the Lancers and scored the first points of the night in the ensuing possession. It sparked some back-and-forth action with neither team grabbing much separation for the first 18 minutes.
Rowell knocked down a triple with under two minutes left before halftime to give CBU a six-point lead, the largest of the first half. The Lancers carried that multi-possession lead into the break, up 37-31 at halftime.
Dominican cut the margin to four points, 39-35, to open the second, but the Lancers quickly caught fire.
Cory Lange grabbed a rebound off his own missed shot, laying it in and drawing a foul in the process to spark a 13-0 run. He finished his extra shot, before Kuol scored eight of the next 10 points to put CBU up 52-35 with 15 minutes left on the clock.
The Penguins weren't ready to give up the fight just yet, however, cutting the margin down into single digits with six minutes remaining, 70-62.
Diouf put the Lancers back up by double-digits, 74-63, heading down the stretch after floating in a shot off a Jason Todd assist.
Still, Dominican would try to chip away at the upper hand in the last five minutes of the game. The Penguins called a timeout with under a minute remaining, trailing 78-69.
The Lancers wouldn't let this one slip away, taking care of business at the free-throw line and making stops on defense to grab the 83-71 victory.
CBU closes out the regular season on Saturday at Holy Names for a 7:30 p.m. tip.
