RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- A series sweep in the first matchup of PacWest play was up for grabs for California Baptist University on Monday, and the 10th-ranked Lancers weren't going to let it slip away.
CBU scored in each of the first three innings on route to a 14-0 win over Holy Names at Totman Stadium. The Lancers improve to 11-3, 4-0 in conference to remain the only undefeated team in PacWest play and the Hawks drop to 4-9, 0-4.
Logan Rinehart, Dylan Stowell, Angel Delgado and Morgan Earman combined for CBU's second-straight shutout and 12 strikeouts on the mound for the Lancers. Rinehart earned the win after five innings on the mound. He struck out more batters than base runners he allowed, with six strikeouts compared to three hits and two walks.
A short turnaround between series will test CBU, as it will head to Hawai'i for two matchups next. The Lancers will play again Friday when they open a series at Hawaii Pacific with first pitch at 8 p.m. PDT. The Sharks will then play a doubleheader with CBU Saturday at 4 p.m. and then wrap it up with a 9 p.m. game Monday.
The Lancers collected 13 hits in the game. Ten different players logged at least one hit and three had two hits: Luke Navigato, Ryan Mota and Angelo Capolupo. Andrew Bash, Billy Rockefeller and Mota each had two runs batted in, while Bell drove in four of his own.
CBU wasted no time and scored after a two-out walk to Bash in the bottom of the first. He moved to third on an error and hit by pitch and then came home after a bases-loaded walk to Bryce Macy.
Three runs scored in the second for the Lancers, with Capolupo leading things off with an opposite field double. Two walks loaded the bases and then Bash plated two with a double to left, while Bell drove in the third with a sacrifice fly to deep left.
Mota blasted a two-run homer in third to score himself and Ryan Williams, who singled aboard, to make it 6-0. Mota started a three-run fifth with a leadoff single and Capolupo singled right after. HNU nearly got out of the inning but decided to intentionally walk Bash and pitch to Bell.
It did not pay off for the Hawks, as Bell laced a bases-clearing double to left center to increase CBU's cushion to 9-0. Five more Lancer runs scored in the seventh on a two-run single from Rockefeller and three-run homer from Macy. Navigato singled, while Bell and John Glenn walked in the inning.
Rinehart retired HNU in order in the third and fifth and overcame two leadoff singles in the second with two strikeouts and fly ball to left field that DJ Porter caught right at the fence. Rinehart then left the bases loaded in the fourth with an inning-ending strikeout.
Stowell pitched the sixth and seventh innings for the Lancers and was perfect, retiring all six batters he faced with the help of four strikeouts.
Delgado gave up just one hit in 1.1 innings, while Earman ended the game with two strikeouts in the top of the ninth.
