AZUSA, Calif. — In one of the biggest track meets of the year, California Baptist University faced tough competition – including future WAC opponents like UMKC and New Mexico State – at the Bryan Clay Invitational, hosted by Azusa Pacific. The Lancers held their own and saw some new personal-best times set, despite chilly weather.
Pierre-Louis Detourbe bettered his provisional time in the 3K steeplechase by six seconds, crossing the finish line in nine minutes, 1.07 seconds – a time Coach Ben Gall thinks should get him into the NCAA Division II Championship Meet in May. He won his section by over five seconds, beating multiple Division I athletes in the process, and now has the third-fastest steeplechase time in CBU history.
Dennis Messmer finished the steeplechase in 9:33.68, while Michael Callaway clocked in at 9:43.37, which was seven seconds faster than his previous best.
In one of the last races of the night, McMarshall Hartzenburg was in one of the faster 5K races and finished in 14:35.67. He already has a provisional mark in the event after running a 14:17.21 at the Occidental Distance Carnival.
Michael Lowrie took 16th in the 5K with a time of 14:40.09, seven seconds faster than his previous best time and just six seconds off a provisional mark. Jayden Emerson finished the 5K in 15:14.19, with Jonah Ross right on his tail at 15:16.10.
The Lancers continue at the Bryan Clay Invitational on Friday before heading to Fresno, Calif., for the PacWest Championship Meet.
