FRESNO, Calif. — After an impressive start to the PacWest Championships the day before, California Baptist University kept its rhythm and saw another conference champion emerge Saturday.
"We had a solid day," said Coach Ben Gall. "Lots of really fun, tactical races. Not a lot of fast times, but good racing."
Emeline Delanis ended the day taking home the PacWest crown in the 5K, after winning the 3K steeplechase the day before. Just like she did the day before, the junior set a new meet record, taking first by a full 22 seconds to earn herself All-PacWest honors with a time of 16 minutes, 56.30 seconds.
Anett Somogyi wasn't far behind Delanis in the 5K, as she went on to take third-place in 17:33.10. The top-three finish earned Somogyi All-PacWest honors as well.
In the 800-meter, Alicia Williams took second to earn her first All-PacWest track honors with a time of 2:16.09. Berenice Cleyet-Merle provided a two-three punch, taking third in 2:16.41.
"I was super excited for Alicia," said Gall.
A slew of Lancers came sprinting in to take fourth through ninth in the 1500-meter event. Leanda du Bruyn was the first Lancer to cross the line, taking fourth place as she clocked in at 4:35.52, while Natalia Novak clocked in at 4:41.51, securing a fifth-place finish. Fruzsi Ladanyi, Katie Deimling, Tori Dutchover and Cleyet-Merle finished one right after the other for sixth through ninth place, respectively. Ladanyi grabbed a time of 4:44.41 for while Deimling clocked in at 4:44.50. Dutchover sprinted past the finish line in 4:45.28 and Cleyet-Merle rounded out the group in 4:46.17.
With only two more tune ups before the NCAA Division II Championships on May 24-26, CBU looks to qualify more runners as they head to the Occidental Invitational next Saturday.
