CHARLOTTE, N.C. — California Baptist University saw two runners qualify for the NCAA Division II Championship Meet, hosted by Johnson C. Smith University, and both earned spots in their respective event finals.
"Both the guys looked good," said Coach Ben Gall. "They ran smart prelims and got themselves into the finals with the least effort possible."
Simon Bedard started Thursday off with a solid 1500-meter race. He was in the faster heat and took fifth with a time of three minutes, 51.56 seconds. The top four runners of each heat, plus the next four fastest times earn a spot in the finals and Bedard's time was the fifth-fastest on the day, even beating out the top finisher of the other heat. Bedard races for a chance at an NCAA Division II championship on Saturday at 3:45 p.m. Eastern.
Pierre-Louis Detourbe followed in the 3K steeplechase prelim and also ran well. He also took fifth in his heat with a time of 9:05.59. It was just .10 seconds off a top-four finish, but was the 10th-fastest time on the day to secure a spot in the final on Friday at 7:15 p.m. Eastern to compete for a spot on the podium.
It marks the fourth year in a row CBU has a finalist in the 3K steeplechase after Valentin Robert was a three-time finalist in the event, including a third-place finish.
"These two both have a great chance to run strong in the finals," said Gall. "I was happy to see how composed and confident they ran."
