RIVERSIDE, Calif. – In a comprehensive team win, California Baptist University grabbed 11 first-place finishes, with nine swim event wins and a clean sweep of the dive events.
It led the Lancers to a 168-69 win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in their second-to-last home event of the season at the Lancer Aquatics Center on Friday afternoon. CBU will host its Senior Day on Saturday, it welcomes two Western Athletic Conference foes, Grand Canyon and Wyoming, for a tri-dual starting at 1 p.m. Â
"We have been doing this distance meet with CMS for the last 18 years," Coach
Rick Rowland said. "The women showed some real depth today, but we are steering our attention toward tomorrow, with two teams from our conference coming in. We are excited about that. It was good to swim some off events today, I think it's a good change of pace."
Rebeca Oviedo,Â
Alina Jungklaus and
Emily Dunkerson won multiple individual events for CBU on Friday. Oviedo won the 200-yard freestyle in one minute, 55.92 seconds and the 500 free in 5:11.23.
"Rebeca won the 200 and 500, like we added expected her," Rowland said. "She really adds to our depth and is a very experienced international swimmer."
Even on a quick turnaround, Jungklaus claimed victory in the 300 individual medley (3:20.65) and 300 butterfly (3:24.92).Â
"Alina really stood out, she's really getting back to where she wants to be as a swimmer," Rowland said. "It was a really good meet for her. It's a tough double for her going from the 300 IM to 300 fly with only a 15-minute break, and she won both of those today. She looked really good."
In her first event since recovering from an injury, Dunkerson won both boards, with 279.98 points on 1-meter and a 286.28 tally at 3-meter.Â
"Emily has only been diving for four days since coming back from her injury, and she is diving at a high level," Dive Coach
Jeff Couto said. "Her scores were a big deal, and we don't even have all of her dives back yet. She showed some mental toughness to remain confident after her injury today."
The Lancers got individual wins from
McKenzie Kelly (50 free, 24.59);
Isabella Rhodes (100 free, 52.95);
Buse Topcu (1000 free, 10:27.16) and
Emily Longfellow (300 back, 3:30.59). Rhodes and Longfellow added runner-up swims in the 200 free (1:57.88) and 300 IM (3:25.38).Â
In the 500-medley relay,
Robin Smallwood, Longfellow, Rhodes and Kelly notched a team win in 5:22.17.Â
CBU swept first through third on the 1-meter board.
Savannah Uhlir (253.13) and
Kiree Lowe (241.88) took second and third behind Dunkerson on the 1-meter.
Janae Jizmejian also took second on the 3-meter (236.85).Â
"Tomorrow is a big day for us, so I hope we built some confidence today we can take into tomorrow," Couto said of the tri-dual with Grand Canyon and Wyoming. "It is going to be tight, but we are in a great place as a program. Tomorrow is a big indicator because it's going to be three of the top teams in the conference in the same place. We'll see how we do."Â Â
