DENVER – California Baptist University emerged as strong contenders for both Western Athletic Conference championships when the league released its pre-championship polls on Tuesday.
The Lancers' women received six of the nine possible first-place votes and edged out Utah Valley in total points, 61-59. The defending champion Lancers have been in peak form all season long. They've never placed outside of the top two this season, and have three first-place finishes in four meets this season.
CBU's men are projected to take second in their race, receiving three of eight first-place votes and trailing UVU by just two points, 47-45. The Lancers' men took fifth place in their first WAC Championship race last year, but are hitting their stride, coming off of a third-place finish at Texas A&M's Arturo Barrios Invitational. The team has not finished outside the top four and any of its meets this year, and put together a runner-up performance at the UC Riverside Invitational in September.
Both teams will head to Kansas City, Mo. for the 2019 WAC Championships, which will be held at Swope Park. The men's 8,000-kilometer race will start first at 8:00 a.m. (PDT), with the women's 6K scheduled for a 9:00 a.m. start.
